Yes, bob2 is a serious sim in that the BDG guys [BoB2 Development Group] take their task of continuously working to make it more realistic and faithful to history very seriously. It is stable for windows operating systems up to and including Windows 7. However, it is not currently stable in Windows 8. Efforts are still being made to find a fix for that.
And yes, it's only necessary to install the latest update [presently 2.12] to fully update the original game.
