Forcing v-sync

Post by philip.ed »

How do I force v-sync in my ATI control panel? For the life of me I can't work out how to do it.

Also, what exactly does it do

Philip, have a look at tweakguides.com and the section on ATI cards that may help you.In the ATI CCC it comes under the section of 'all settings' as Vertical Refresh. It also gives you info and help on the ATI Tray tool utility. This has been covered before ,but I had problems with using it and have returned to the CCC.It would appear my problem was quite common :? I hope this may help. :)

This is how to do it in FSX. I've done it for my ATI 4890 1gB. Works well.

Force VSync

No idea how this info converts for BoB but the idea is that the application (Sim) controls VSync and that the Control Panel says Application Controlled.

AFAIR BoB2 had no issues obeying standard Vsync setting in nVidia Control Panel so it shouldn be the same for ATI.

As for Why Vsync is needed? What are advantages and disadvantages of Vsync? take a look here

Please read those two topics through and through and you'll know everything you need.

Please note that there is an information that "there is no disadvantages of Vsync". Unfortunately it is not valid for BoB2, IIRC - only for the DCS Black Shark. In other words all the Vsync limitations will occur when Vsync is enabled in BoB2.

This does not work with the latest ATI drivers.
I tried "wait for vertical refresh always on" and "wait for vertical refresh on, unless application specifies"
I did this setting in global.

I also tried this adding bob2.exe in my ATI setup.

Still I got tearing.

Anyone with same issue?

A belated response, I know.

Hi PoC!
Unfortunately it's a common problem with AMD control center. It's often useless for forcing 3D settings. I'd recommend you search through AMD, overclockers, hardforum etc. forums for a solution. Perhaps someone recommended a workaround or an external application.

In either case it would be desired to post on AMD forums about the problem.

I used to have an AMD/ATI graphic card (a pretty high end on even by todays standards) and it had tearing.

The main issue that i found seems to be due to particle density. Anything above medium tends to lead to tearing. As far a I got with it, it's not a v-synch issue, it's more to do with the way ATI/AMD grpahics cards code processes the texture.

I would suggest medium particle density (any higher makes no difference anyway) and see if that corrects things.

There is no way an in-game effect itself could cause image tearing.

If you insist. But when i turned particle densities to medium, my tearing issue disappeared. All i can pass on is what i found.

I see. Well, the particle density is the killer setting in BoB2, that's for sure. It may well be that it amplifies some issues not technically tied to it.
