Absolutely love this aspect of the game. Thanks for including it. I get to see the 'big picture' but fly only with my chosen squadron. Have been a few times watching the raid blocks slide across the map, and knowing we're refuelled and ready, I'm thinking 'C'mon, scramble us....come on man, scramble us...." and watch as another squadron gets the call. Then we get orders to patrol instead. Sitting there in my ready chair early last evening at around 1740h when a raid started to build up, 150+, and figured we'd just end up on aftermath patrol... wait...the telephone rings in the hut...Scramble... WooHoo! Intercept into an already boiling melee. "Pick your targets" Red Leader erupts in a ball of flame, my flight leader, Green Leader is disentegrated. "Fighters" Twisting, turning, suddenly my windscreen shatters, engine wrecked, spiralling for Blighty...manage to claw my way out, silk chute like angels wings setting me gently down into a fallowed field. Spent the rest of the evening chatting with the farmer and his family while waiting for a squadron car. We lost nine machines and six pilots, including our Squadron Leader and my flight leader, argh.

Yep, it's my favourite way of enjoying the RAF campaign. I choose 54 squadron at Rochford from Eagle Phase, Aug 12, because it doesn't get wiped off the map too early, but it gets some pretty intense action.

Of course, in real life it was withdrawn north due to severe losses by mid Sept 1940, so if we manage to survive past that, I give myself a pat on the back!

I haven't played the campaign for years but one thing I did enjoy was the non-scripted nature of them that's to say I got bounced one by 109s, great fun, something that was sadly missing from IL-2 IMO whose campaigns never felt better than a series of non-connected missions.

Cheers

BOBII campaign is non-scripted and dynamic.

Things happen to the player and all around the player (when he decides to go off course).

The missions are always different and the results are always different as well.

Glad you're enjoying it, Baldric. I plan some single pilot campaign time once we get 2.10 out of the door. It's really very unpredictable, isn't it.

The thing about the BOBII Comander campaign and the Single Player Campaign is that they are truly unique for a WWII flight sim. Falcon IV has a dynamic campaign that is very good but it is a jet sim. The development cost will limit developers from implementing a dynamic campaign in the future, IMHO. Most new flight sims will provide a Mission Builder and the players will be responsible for developing the campaigns but they are static (like IL2 and ROF).

The ability of a flight sim to create missions on the fly depending on events and simulate each day of the historic BOB is truly unique, IMHO. All BOBII owners should give the BOBII campaign a good hard try (and yes, it takes some study and time to understand the Player/user interface).

I still remember my favorite campaign moment...like it was just yesterday (cue uplifting music).

We were returning from a sortie against a party of Stukas where we hadn't even got through the escort screen. I'd bagged an Emil, but then the sky was empty. I found my flight heading back to base, so joined up on my squadron leader. Ahead of me, and about 2,000 feet higher, I saw a Sq of Hurricanes heading South on another intercept. 'Go gettem!' I thought. Then, as I watched, up above the Hurricanes I saw a mass of contrails, which while I was watching, broke and plummetted down toward the Hurricanes. Holy crap! I padlocked one and called it on the radio but it was too late, the 109s blasted through the Hurricanes and two of them went down straight away. I turned toward the fight and for the next ten minutes the sky was full of Emils, Spits, Hurricanes all duelling to the death. I got shot down somewhere near Hawkinge and bailed out, then stood there watching the last of the fight from the field I landed in.

The 109s got the better of us that day, but it was so immersive that's irrelevant.

Lost my first pilot today...July 18, after 9 patrols and 3 intercepts, 2 confirmed (Ju87's). Second flight of the day (first scramble though) and 151 Squadron was sent 'solo' into a 150+ raid on Dover docks. It was like kicking at and missing the hornets nest. Squadron is down to four functional machines, 9 pilots, no leaders...and the day isn't anywhere near done...

Dispersal hut is quiet now, Manston isn't quite the same. Anyone returning 'home' has done so. Ground Crew wander...almost shuffling... about, quietly, a few red-eyed. Several empty deck chairs lay overturned, the dispersal hut operator nursing a sore foot. The telephone rings, the nerves, already shot and jangled, jump. Quiet words spoken into the reciever. Stand down until further notice, Command is scrounging up replacements, first to arrive within a few hours.

Fitter and Rigger from Green Two share a cigarette and then wander off to Tool Stores, looking for the QM and his bottle of scotch.

An hour passes and a car, a dusty green 1936 Buggatti, pulls up slowly, rubber tyres crunching gravel. Engine shuts off. The driver, brash and brown haired, young...too young...steps out and stretches, looking around. He steps over to the dispersal hut but is stopped by a taller man in messy flying kit, with dishevelled reddish hair and dark circles around his eyes.
The tired face looks at the lad inquisitively.

"Nash, second lieutenant (leftenant), reporting to the CO of 151 as ordered..." The younger man smiled, adding, "Sir.."

"Not now, Nash...Nash is it? We've no bloody CO and we just got our arses handed to us by Jerry...so sit there, and shut it. I'm sure someone will come by in a day or two and sort you out. As for me, Im off to get a bath and a long drink of scotch."

Nicely done Baldric. War is hell. You did your duty. That is all that can be asked.
