I'm guessing it's an aerial as well.
Based on deductive reasoning my dear Watson, I can't see an aerial in the usual place which I thought was like the Spit parked next to it.

Ah, aerial - never knew we had that. A later Mark. Wonder when that came in??

Confusion - when I said H''s serial overlaid, I meant Hurricane's serial. So - both have the same treatment.

Strange that one lot is covered by the recognition band & the other by the Code letter.

PS - a propos 'my' Spit, did I post the soundtrack on this Forum??

Not that I recall, and I read all your posts.

I've g'ld the painted over reg and found these two photos;

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Hawker-H ... 7b4c5ff848

and this not very good video; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1jwIYD7Tjg

So on closer inspection i suspect it is a radio aerial from a modern light aircraft and we can now see that the pitot head is in the right place.
If it is an aerial, it seems a daft place put it...VHF comms on the ground wouldn't be too good, not to mention a poke in the eye with a sharp stick for ground crew under the wing  I think they just rushed it to get it airworthy.

:) Hi Tim,you have posted this before but i am not sure which forum it was on.
The Merlin sounds just so wonderful.
During the war was the Merlin looked upon as a "special sound" or is this just something we have come to appreciate in the years after the war.
I daresay it depends on your involvement,an axis family ducking under the sound of a Lancaster may have bad feelings about the sound whereas we seem to associate the sound as "freedom".
My wifes Nan was driven insane by the V1 Doodlebugs, literally she went mad ,had a breakdown.
Wonderful to some and harbinger of doom to others.

I knew it was old hat, but couldn't recall where.

Sound? Difficult. I imagine that it was OUR sound, so friendly. And now, much nostalgia?

Unlike the out-of-synch threatening sound of the enemy.
