Hi

I am hoping that you can help me out. I am a complete novice flight sim gamer. Like many I have always wanted to fly a Spitfire or Hurricane and the only realistic option of course is a flight sim. So I found myself at a relatively advanced age looking into commandeering my son's computer (he is at college) and entering the world of flight sims. After long and careful consideration I decided on BOBII for all of the reasons readers of these forums will no doubt agree with.

So I bought the game online and it has just arrived! I am absolutely busting to load it up and try it. BUT. Over the last few days whilst I waited for the postman to arrive I kept myself happy by watching Youtube in game videos of BOBII and documentaries. I happened upon the Discovery Channel documentary Spitfire Ace which had been uploaded to Youtube. It put a group of four young lads through the same sort of training as the BOB pilots with one being given the chance to have 9 hours training on the Grace dual seater Spit. I understand that was all that the average BOB newbie pilot had before going on his first sortie (other than the experienced pilots who started off). It got me to thinking. In my situation I have a good opportunity to try the same sort of thing for myself.

So I now find myself having packed away my copy of BOBII !

I have ordered FSX and Tiger Moth add on. That way I can try to "learn to fly" in the TM which I understand most newbie's did before getting the posting to their Squadrons. After a certain amount of "flight time" I then intend to have my "9 hours" Spit training on BOB II , get myself posted and see what happens.

I am sure that people have done this kind of experiment before and I would be very glad to hear from anyone who has done so to learn how they fared, how they went about it and whether they would do anything different. Specifically how long did they take getting to"learn to fly" in the TM, about how many hours would be a good "average" before going for the "Spit training". This to recreate the kind of experience that a young man in the 1940s may have had flying part time in a local air club for example.

In terms of hardware I have
Windows 7 Home Premium
Acer Aspire X3950, 177GB of free memory, Intel Core i3CPU 550 @ 3.2GHz, 4GB RAM, 64bit
NVidia Graphics card GeForce 315
Phillips 24" screen 1080 HD 2ms response

The above will be running the games and

Saitek Rudder Pedals
TrackIR 5
HotasX Thrustmaster T Flight joystick and throttle control.

All advice on whether the above hardware is up to the job would be appreciated. I may have to up the specs if it won't. Again any advice on what I would need will be appreciated.

All advice on the experiment would also be greatly received; as stated especially any help from anyone who has already done this kind of thing before.

Regards

CA

Let us look at your DxDiag. Here's how to create a DXDIAG:

DX Diag is a utility/report that dumps technical info to a text file. The file is fairly lengthy, and is divided into sections for easy management. The detail in this file may help us undersdand the players OC and OC environment.

*Click on your "Start" button.
*Select "Run".
*Clear the "Open" box and type "dxdiag" (without the quotes).
*Click "OK".
*A box called "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" should open.
*At the bottom of this window, you will find a button called "Save All Information".
*Click this button.
*A box will pop up prompting you to save a file called "dxdiag.txt"
*Save this file to your "Desktop".
*Now you should see a text file called "dxdiag.txt" sitting on your Windows desktop.
*That's it!! Now we will have the info necessary to help you efficiently

Just cut and paste it into this thread and yes it is large.

Since I am a «veteran» in flight simming I'm not able to replicate your test.
But, if you allow me, after your 9h in the Spit and a few lectures on combat tactics you should try the BoB campaign and see how long you can survive or how many Kills you'll be able to bag just to compare with the glorious Few!

I wish you the best of luck and hope to read some of your exploits in the near future

Hi Charlie,

I think your PC will run BOBII on mostly high setting. I do not know your video card but it sounds like it should perform well from what I read about it.

Your plan sounds super but it would be a bit too slow for me so I would also install and get BOBII running and play around with it.

Here is some reading for you:

Hi PappyCain

Thank you for your post and for the manual - that is just the kind of thing I need. If anyone at all can give me any information on how newbie pilot's training was organised and what was covered I would be really grateful; the most urgent topic of course is what did civilian pilots in flying clubs learn about flying in the Tiger Moth as that is the first part of my plan. All help and advice is greatly appreciated

Regards

Hi Buddye

Many thanks for your help and advice about my PC. Is there anything that I can do to my PC to ensure that I get the max sim experience? I would like to play it on its max settings if possible.

Regards

CA

Hi Charlie,

One step at a time. Get BOBII setup and running well first.

Chuck

Don't forget there is a Tiger Moth (in beta) for BOBII.

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=22930

It comes with a self installer and uninstaller, so you should be able to installed once you have BOBII up and running?

Hi Heinkill

Thank you for the info re the BOBII Tiger Moth - that looks brilliant.

I have emailed the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum in Canada to see if they can help me with the kind of training pilots would have been given in the TM to try to make my project as "realistic" as possible. I am itching to get flying but am holding myself back until I have found out some more.

Hi PV

Thank you for the Youtube link that is very useful - I shall be watching that a lot

Regards

Hello All

I have succesfully uploaded the game and the TM module. There were various warnings about the TM affecting the BOBII campaign modules - is that still true?

I am looking forward to my pilot training in theTM, but, as it is Xmas - it will have to wait for now :0)

Regards and a Merry Xmas to one and all
