Anybody got any recommendations on a new joystick?
I have a Microsoft FF2 at the moment but with next to 0 support for Xp its beginning to annoy me, plus i lost the ability to set my rudder axis today in BOB2 even tho the axis functions fine in other games and windows.

I've recently worn out a Saitek X-45 stick. Was very happy with it and would have saved up for an X-52. But I got a Logitech Force 3D pro and could't go back to BoBII with no force feedback. I use it with the X-45 throttle unit with its' rudder 'pedals' (couldn't go back to no throttle either), so have the best of both worlds.
Personally, I find the Logitech a good, robust value for money stick, but there are those who don't like them. If Saitek did a force feedback HOTAS set up, I'd seriously consider it.
If money's no object, you could go for this:

There's a French firm working on something very similar for the 'other side'.

Yep. Apparently Saitek are thinking about a force feedback HOTAS. I'd be very interested if it came to pass.
I've had the X-45 for years and it was very much used and abused - don't let me wearing it out put anyone off their products. The buttons and hat switches still work, I'm trying to think of an ergonomic way of incorporating them into my set up - would save a lot of leaning into the keyboard and fumbling for the right key.
Ah, I see I was typing while you were posting bigpickle. Looks like a good stick at a good price.

Couldn't comment on Saitek force feedback - I'm using a Logitech stick - my first force feedback one, I've got nothing to compare it to. I'm happy with it but maybe someone can compare it with another ff stick. That Saitek one you linked to looks like you get a lot of stick for your money, and if it sways your judgement, Saitek have got an excellent after sales reputation. If I'd seen a Saitek on the shelf, I'd have gone for it - I was in a panic when my stick died and didn't fancy flying by keyboard. Not that I'm unhappy with Logitech in any way.
Wait a while for some more replies - someone will be along with experience of more ff sticks, I'm sure.

Setting up the different axis and rotaries can be alittle touchy especially when you have multiple input Hotas system, but it does work.
You can get the MS joystick recorder to work in XP. You have to go under the Data Execution Prevention tab and Turn on Dep for all programs and services except those I select: I just can't remember which dll you enable. Someone here may remember. It has something to do with dll that fails when you try to access the Recorder.
To get there you go to My Computer/properties/advanced/performance settings/Data Execution Prevention. Turn on Dep /Run dll as an app
This may not be a good solution for some as it may have some virus protection issues. Others with more knowledge could advise.

You have to cancel DEP for joy.cpl. Don't know what the possible downside of doing this is but when I was running XP and had it done, I didn't have any adverse effects and it allowed me to run SideWinder Central - which is more than I can do now under Vista which wont allow you to set DEP for joy.cpl unless you turn it off for everything.

Have you tried to assign the axis from the Options/Controls - Custom screen - it's not clear from your first post exactly what you've done.
I find I sometimes have to 'twiddle' the control I want to assign the axis to a few times before it gets recognised.

Yes, you have to move the rudder for it to be detected.
I use a Thrustmaster Top Gun Afterburner FFB stick. Very happy.

yeah in the controls selection i have set my ailerons by moving the corresponding axis when i comes to rudder, for some reason it has just stopped detecting the movement, i know the joystick works cos its fine in other games and on properties, it seems the bob detection for it has died on me, it have tried every which way to get it to detect the axis but it just wont do it, i even cleared all my control settings and reapplied them
Strange, if the rudder axis is working in game (when playing BOBII) then the controls software should detect it. We have many Microsoft FF joystick customers here, I seem to remember.
Do you only have the one joystick? If you do then:
You might try unplugging the USB stick cable. Start BOBII and it should select the key board for you. Shut BOBII down. Replug in the USB cable for the stick. Start BOBII and see if it set up the stick automaticly (you should not have to ever enter controls for the axis).
