is there a way to reset the airframe hours?

Post by AbstractArtist »

Just flown the C172 and crashed it. Couldn't tell what the problem was, and I want a fresh aircraft to try again. Please help. Love the aircraft and want to retry with 0 flight hours on it like a brand new plane. also the preflight inspection when I click does not work on the actions.

Have you read through the manual at all yet?

The maintenance hangar is accessed by pressing shift 7 or 8. I forget which.

You also need to use the context menu shift-4 for fuelling and oil.

The preflight actions only are used to correct a problem, otherwise they do not trigger any behavior. You should however be able to check the pitot heat, sample fuel, check oil level and set chocks or tie downs. Checking the trim tab and flaps are also modeled.

Lastly, make sure you have downloaded and applied the updates.

If you really want to reset the airframe hours to zero, go into Documents/ A2A/ Cessna 172 and delete the .dat files inside. Back them up in a safe place before you delete them.
Oracle's solution achieves the same result, but you keep your already accumulated airframe time.

Can't you can just click major overhaul in the maintenance hangar and have that zero out the hours?

An overhaul zeros the engine time, but not the airframe time. Deleting the .dat zeros both. Honestly, Oracle, yours is the best, easiest and safest solution!

Wow didn't know, I just assumed everything got reset. I've avoided pressing that in the hopes that my plane will eventually start showing some character aside from the usual maintenance items.

Thats a known characteristic of the type of 172 modeled. I don't have specific numbers for you, but the manual talks about idling recommendations and best mixture leaning practices! The two types of spark plug available also have different fouling characteristics!

also when I look at oil level in weights and preflight, it goes down to 7.2 quarts even on the new aircraft I just brought

Just for reference guys, the "RESET" option on the shift 3 menu can also be used to reset the aircraft's state including airframe hours.

Thanks,
Nick

Air cooled aircraft engines are nothing like water cooled automotive engines. Tolerances are much looser due to the fact that the large cylinders will expand and contract with power and outside air temp changes. The result is that oil will get past the oil control rings on the pistons and end up being burned as part of the combustion process.

Most of the engines I operate IRL use about .1 quart per hour.

The other thing is that they tend not to hold a full sump of oil. If you top off the oil, most of these engines will rather quickly blow out some amount through the breather until reaching a level where that doesn't happen. Again these engines have some blowby past the compression rings, causing the crankcase to pressurize just enough to blow some of that "extra" oil out.

A worm out engine with one or more cylinders that have leaky rings will usually see oil consumption rising, though the evidence may be found in different places depending on the nature of the wear.

Lean aggressively on the ground to avoid fouling the spark plugs and keep rpms between 800-1000 rpm.

You have to operate these A2A models like the real aircraft.

Hello,

it sounds like you need to read the manual. I would fully recommend a manual read or at least the C172 Trainer videos to help you get on with the professional level simulation.
