Flying hours and maintence on aircraft

Post by AbstractArtist »

When should I change oil and also other items on the airframe? I also have a yellow starter which I don't understand how or why?

You may have worn the starter a little from excessive cranking. The engine should generally only be turned for about 4 revolutions before stopping to let the starter and battery rest. After two attempts, the starter should rest for several minutes before trying again.

If you aren't getting started within a few seconds of cranking, then you may need to adjust priming, and throttle position, and overall technique. This is realistic and I have seen a starter casing actually partially melted from someone that cranked too long.

Yelliw doesn't mean it's about to fail. I've had many components in the yellow for a long time. The oil filter is one example. Red means it's no good.

Oil change depends on your usage pattern. I change it every 50 hours on the tach.
