Landing sounds?

Post by kbergphd »

I have my A2A C172, plus the Comanche and the Cherokee. I use FSFlight School 2018 to practice landings. My landings often get scores of 80-90% with the following comments (sometimes better sometimes worse):

Landing Score:91.70

Landing was successful in the following areas:
Good glideslope on visual approach. [80%]
Good alignment with runway on visual approach. [80%]
Gentle touchdown. [43 FPM]
Good landing speed - not too fast. [42 KIAS]
Wings were level.
Distance from runway threshold (visual approach): [801 feet]
Landed on runway surface.
Glideslope held until flare.
Good pitch control after touchdown.
Good pitch at landing. [4 degrees]
With flaps - good job. [37 degrees]
Heading aligned with runway.
Throttle(s) idle.
Good controlled final descent to touchdown.

But each time I get the same sound of a hard landing. I have watched J.T. of Three Green Gaming YouTube viedoes land his A2A C182 with no hard landing sound (just a swish). Now I am not claiming to be as good as pilot as J.T. but I would expect that a touchdown at 43 FBM would rate a swish :? ? Is there something wrong with my sound settings or can they be adjusted. :?

Thanks, Kent.

Don't feel bad, that was a perfectly fine landing. I especially like how it measures other factors than the FPM at touchdown.. Like lineup, glidepath, speed, and touchdown point. Those should be your primary concern before making any judgment on the gentleness of the touchdown.
Those other landings are what we call "greasers" as it feels so smooth like the runway is covered in grease (I do not recommend trying that BTW.. it can make braking difficult).

Double check your settings too for a tech issue. Brakes being activated can mean you dont get this sound. Its also worth noting that the red brakes message in sim isnt activated at 1% brakes but a lot larger meaning its possible to have brakes engaged slightly and not know. So worth checking your control calibrations and settings.

thanks,
