Autoland with ILS?

Post by RAF Gibraltar »

is it possible to get the plane to lock up with an ILS and land itself or at least line me up with the runway with the autopilot? if so, could someone tell me the steps in doing so? I do not find the c172 or actual Bendix-King manual to be helpful at all.

thanks

The KAP140 autopilot pilot's guide has the step by step instructions.

Basically... GPS in NAV/VLOC mode, ILS frequency dialed in, autopilot in ALT hold
and HDG mode. Aim for roughly a 45 degree intercept with the localizer.
Set the OBS to the localizer course. Select APR on the autopilot.
While the HDG indicator is blinking on the autopilot, set the Heading Bug
to the localizer course.

The autopilot will direct to a 45 degree localizer intercept, and if below the glideslope,
will intercept the glideslope and fly the airplane to the runway.

... and wreck the plane. :)

This system is not going to autoland and you will need to hand fly the final approach. I believe the limitations call for one to disconnect below 800' AGL with the KAP 140.

There's a button top left to the avionics panel. A light with GPS or NAV will be visible.
If you haven't any GPS selected, the GPS button ha sa patch on it, stating, this is inactive.

Don't confuse glideslope with localizer...

You mean intercepting the localizer...

Thanks! The autopilot should intercept the localizer first, and the glideslope second.. if everything
is set up correctly. I have edited the original post for clarity.
