Add-on Gamin 430 for PA-28 180

Post by hmollin »

Is there a recommendation for which Garmin 430 add-on works best with the PA-28 180? Are there any special installation instructions? Thanks. Hunter

Either reality xp or flight1 gns 430 work. You have to purchase the 430 separate and install it on your computer. Then go to start A2a Cherokee configuration and select whichever gps unit you purchased and boom it is right there in the plane waiting for you.

Thanks! I bought/installed the flight 1 430/530 but it didn’t just pop into the Cherokee. I tried the configuration utility but no luck. Any suggestions?

Figured it out. Should have read your post more carefully. I hadn’t set up the Gps in the a2a configuration tool. But now there are a few more issues. It won’t turn on in the panel, and will only only turn on in the pop up (with panel still off). The nav/gps switch is inop. A few times and I’m not sure why, I got a double face image on the gauge. That gauge in the panel would turn on. I did convert from reality xp to flight 1 in the utility. Thanks in advance for your help. Hunter

Hello Hunter,

As regards the GNS 430 not turning on in the panel, it may be worth making sure that the default radios are not switched off. To do this, use the Shift 3 menu to revert back to the "NO GPS" option, check both Bendix King radios are powered-up and then revert back to the GNS, again via the Shift 3 menu.

It's normal for the panel-mounted GPS/NAV toggle switch to be labelled "inop." when the GNS is installed. That's because the GPS itself includes a button on the bottom bezel (marked 'CDI') to switch between sources.

I'm not clear what you mean by "double face image on the gauge". Could you share a screenshot to clarify if the issue persists? (Info on how to do this here.)

Thanks,
Nick

Thanks Nick. The radios are on. The panel mounted gns 430 is either double faced (1 faceplate over another) and will turn on in the panel, or not double faced and won’t turn on in the panel. The pop ups work and will turn on but then the panel shuts off. The pop up from the non-double face does not sync. with the VOR. It says the quota for attachments is reached. Thanks. Hunter

It sounds to me like the Flight 1 GNS tool may have caused some issues with the panel.cfg Hunter.

I recommend that you use the A2A Aircraft Configurator to revert the GPS back to default and then set t it back to the F1 GNS 430 option again. (t's easiest if you do this when FSX isn't running.) This should overwrite your current copy of the panel.cfg with a good one. Please don't use the Flight 1 option at all; just the A2A Cherokee Aircraft Configurator.

Thanks,
Nick

P.S. You can't attach images directly to the forum posts. Instead you have to upload to a file-sharing service as mentioned in the post I linked above.

Hi Nick. Great minds think alike. I did try going back to the default in the a2a config tool and then re-choosing the F1 gns. There is no choice for the F1 gns 430/530 in the a2a tool...only reality xp and Mindstar are there. Reality xp is the only choice that works. Without going back into the ft1 tool, the gns 430/530 in the Cherokee panel is not clickable and won’t turn on. Really baffled!!

Thanks Hunter,

Actually, now I think about it, native support for the newer Flight 1 GNS units has so far only been added to the Prepar3D version of the Cherokee. You're using FSX I take it?

Yes...FSX. I had asked this forum which ones are best and flight 1 was recommended. I’m waiting to hear back from flight 1. Thanks. Hunter

Hi Hunter,

I don't own the F1 products myself, but I think if you select the RXP GPS using the A2A configurator, and then use the F1 tool to 'replace' it, you should be able to get it working in the virtual cockpit. However, we do hope to roll out support for additional third-party GPS configurations with future updates for FSX products.

Let us know how you get on, and I should be able to send you an updated panel.cfg file which will do the trick if all else fails.

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,
I was doing all that. The pop up looks and works fine but in the panel it has a double face. Hope the attached drop box link helps. Thanks. Hunter

Thanks Hunter,

Yes, I see what you mean now. Please can you try replacing your existing copy of the panel.cfg for the Cherokee with this one and see if it allows you to successfully use the F1 GNS 430.

Panel.cfg

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\A2A_Piper_PA28_180_Cherokee\panel\panel.cfg

Nick

Hi Nick. Thanks for your efforts. I swaped out the panel file as per your instructions. Unfortunately no change. I’ve been in touch with the F1 folks and they said there’re working on a fix. The F1 gauges work with my default FSX aircraft but they are all pop ups. Nothing in any panels. Do you think it’s an a2a or an F1 issue? Hunter

Any progress on this? The Flight 1 forum suggested it was a a2a Cherokee panel.cfg issue. Hunter
