Windows 8

Post by Buddye »

We have had mixed results getting BOBII to run on windows 8. Here is a Sim HQ thead with our first reported problem:

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/t ... ost3712922

So please do not purchase BOBII and expect it to run if you have Windows 8.

The current BDG members do not run Windows 8 so we have no way to work on the issues.

Got a brand new rig for my birthday and was a bit worried because it came preinstalled with Win8, but I have BOB2 running nicely under XP SP3 compatibility mode, with no problems now. FPS 50-60 with all settings maxed out at 1920x1080x32. Even my in menu videos are working again now! They haven't worked for years. BoB2 never looked better, I have to say. Phew!

Tried on Win7 compatibility but it didn't work.

Machine specs are:

Operating System: Windows 8 64-bit
Model: ASUSTeK G75VW.218
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz (8 CPUs)
Memory: 8GB RAM
Gfx: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M Dedicated Memory: 3GB

Side note: I was a bit worried that BoB2 wouldn't run on Win8 so before I even tested it I had gone out and bought an extra copy of Win7, partitioned the disk and tried to install Win7 on the partition.

You can't install Win7 onto a Win8 machine. Only the other way around! Grrrrrrrr.

Luckily it proved unnecessary and now I have all my favourite games up and running on Win8.

Which btw for PC owners is a perfectly useless change from Win7 if you ask me.

Heinkill,

I suspect your Windows 8 hasn't loaded the latest updates. If it hasn't, don't let it. That's when my trouble started. After the updates. It kept crashing on d3d9.dll. If yours has updated and BOBII is still running. Then it may be pointing to the ATI cards being at fault, as I see you are using Nvidia.

Nope, spoke too soon. Started a campaign, after 3 frags got the D3D9 error.

Oh well, can still run it on my old PC when I want to...but not good for the future of the sim if we cant fix this.

FWIW windows autoupdated so not much I can do about that without a full rollback.

If Prem is correct and one of the Windows updates caused the issue , can you figure which update did it?

Windows installed no less than 50 updates at once to this new system. So if I rollback Buddye, it will roll back all 50. Don't think doing that will be much help.

I had been getting ctd as well following about 15min of flt. Error report was same as others have posted in the forum. So I dug around and found I had a (stand-alone) directx_nov2007_redist.exe in a downloads folder; it is 65623KB in size. I figured what the heck, BoB2 is crashing anyway; and unpacked w/ 7zip and installed. I was surprised that it started updating dx files because I had recently re-installed BoB2 patch 2.12 and had followed it's notice to update directx (webinstaller).
Well, I ran BoB v2.12 after directx2007 finished updating itself and no-crashes. I'll keep testing BoB2, but maybe Win8 is erroneously updating directx somehow?
Maybe this will be helpful to others?
The DXSETUP.exe after unpacking properties: File Version 4.9.0.0904; Date Modified 10/22/2007
That is the same directx version from the WinXp days I think; though the file size seems off, should've been twice as big?

Random times, but always the same content in the crashlog?
[bobroot]\crashlog.txt, new events are appended to the bottom;
the pertinent information occurs in the first 25 or so lines after
each instance of a line starting

------------ Begin of section written with bob.exe, ...

Date and time are noted in the text between the stackdump and the modules list.
This file isn't ever deleted by the program, so if you haven't cleared it, it will
have content going back to the date of your install.

ONly if it is something different than the d3d9.dll ones
that have been reported.

Thanks, it looks like the d3d9.dll is the problem.

No, people with wwin 8 need to report the issue with Microsoft and push it.
