Problem with patch 2.12

Post by PV »

madmax wrote:Hi Guys
I have been successfully running V2.11 with skins & it was great! I have just downloaded &
installed v12 but it starts up ok then after 10/20 secs crashes with a note 'Battle of Britain English Text has stopped
working'
Can you advise me what to do/what I have done wrong plz
Hi MM:
Just reviewed your previous posts, it seems you must
have bought a new vid card, as that was the obstacle
before, and if you found that would run 2.11 OK, then
v2.12 ought to have run OK as well, as we haven't done
anything to make the latter more challenging. Mostly
2.12 improved the campaign logic, with just a few
extra terrain goodies as usual. The general load on the
machine should be much the same between the two.
There was no addition to the multiskin for 2.12 either,
so that shouldn't be a problem.

There are few possibilities. If you patched up without saving your
previous bdg.txt file (that is an install option), and you had
tweaked some things to get 2.11 to work, you will have lost those
tweaks and will have to reset them. I believe, though, that GFX
settings should be preserved even when bdg.txt gets reset to
defaults. As always, particle density must be set at medium or lower.
Oh, and in the release notes are a couple of things about the launch
icon, which the installer messes with. Let's see...oh yeah:
Note7: Vista and Windows 7 users may need to apply the 'Vista/Windows 7 fix' to your desktop shortcut as a fresh 2.11 install will overwrite the previous shortcut.
In fact, it is generally a good idea to go over all the release
notes which are repeated in the thread I lifted your question
from.

When you say crash after 10 to 20 seconds, that is after launching
the 3D, right? I guess we can take a look at the crash log, though
it isn't likely to help much, as the problem is bound to be with
the system, not the program code. But it is odd to get this sort
of thing when the previous patch was OK. Going from v2.10 to 2.11
was a problem for people with 32 bit machines, but you have a 64 bit
machine, and there is no significant challenge from 2.11 to 2.12,
so I'm somewhat puzzled.

Hi
Thanks for coming back on that. Yep I took your good advice & purchased an expensive £250 Radeon HD 7790 graphics card which did the trick & ran V11 just fine with excellent
graphics etc. The only thing I did was to put the compass around the level flight indicator. It came on but was in a different plane to the indicator except for a couple of times so you viewed it at an oblique angle - very strange - I didn't get round to looking at what to do to cure it cos I realised that I should be running in V12 which is when my problems started!

I got fed up with it last night & shut down my computer down. I came back in tonight fired it up and yes you have guessed it - it worked just fine. I tried a couple of different missions & no probs. I then stopped playing for 20mins & then came back to it & stared the game again and as son as it gets into 3D it crashes with same message about English text has stopped working.

I extracted from the windows message the following details which are all double Dutch to me but I expect it will mean something to you!
Here is the message:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: bob.exe
Application Version: 2.1.2.0
Application Timestamp: 50d4f336
Fault Module Name: bob.exe

Additional Information 3: 0a9e
Additional Information 4: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789

I can send my crash file details if that will help.
So its an intermittent problem which is frustrating to say the least because V12 looks great!
I would be very grateful if you have any ideas of what I should do!

I'm afraid that stuff doesn't help much. That stuff is windows
generated; we have BoB2 write our own crashlog. To be honest,
I can't do much with a crash file myself except what I've learned
from reading Buddye's analyses, to enable me to identify if the
crash is really due to BoB2 code, or, as is more usual, due to the
OS getting upset about something.

Anyway, The information necessary for diagnosing a crash resides in the crashlog.txt
file which is written in the BoB2 root folder. This file gets appended with
every event, so the relevant parts for the most current problem are found at
the bottom. I believe the date is right for v2.12 in the line below; the relevant
part of the crashlog will be in the 25 or so lines below the last instance of this
line in the file:

------------ Begin of section written with bob.exe, Build/Rebuild all date: Dec 21 2012 17:39:32 ---------

Somewhere in the first fifteen or so lines after that line, will be a line noting the
date of the crash, and you can check that to confirm the log is for a current
event. Some crashes are so fundamental that the program never gets a chance
to write a crashlog.

Hi PV
I will look at it tonight when I get home & send you the relevant extract to see what you can find
Thanks for your continued support I really appreciate it!
In my brief flying whilst the v12 remained stable I was taking off from Tangmere which is only 20 miles from my home ( it has a really great museum). I was delighted to see that one of you clever guys has put Chichester Cathedral in - its a great marker for coming in to land !!
Not that I have got that far recently before my computer crashed!!

Hi PV
Below is my latest crash log extract - hopefully you can deduce something from it! In the meantime I am going to clean out the installation & reinstall &
see if that helps
I look forward to hearing from you

Hmmm. There should be a line as I quoted above,

------------ Begin of section written with bob.exe, Build/Rebuild all date: Dec 21 2012 17:39:32 ---------

and then there ought to be about five more lines before the
stack dump (old format) line. These are the ones I need
(and there would be more useful ones further on, if the dump
wasn't writing in old format, which it does at times for reasons
known only to those with far more coding knowledge than I). They
ought to start with "Bob.exe caused an exception..." or something
similar.

In my brief flying whilst the v12 remained stable I was taking off from Tangmere which is only 20 miles from my home ( it has a really great museum). I was delighted to see that one of you clever guys has put Chichester Cathedral in - its a great marker for coming in to land !!
Yup, none of that is my work, it was Ben making the model,
and either Ben or Bader placing it. However, I spent a while
getting Thorney Island right a few years ago, and for 2.13,
I have vastly improved the appearance of Bournemouth through
to the Stour estuary, and Newhaven up to Lewes. I am
currently working on the Arun Valley, and I hope to get it done
for the 2.13 release, whenever that occurs.

Hi PV
Sucess! Last night I stripped out every bit of BoB from my machine! I reinstalled 11 and checked that it worked ok which it did then with some trepidation loaned 12 + 11skin.
Thank goodness it seems to work fine now so my next task is to try & load the Tiger Moth! Any tips?
I shall have a fly down to Bournemouth & inspect your work

Again thanks for your support

The Tiger Moth was an experiment to add new aircraft into BoBII. Unfinished and unpolished.
It will definitely mess up the Campaign, and even Instant Action, as I recall.

If you are new to BoBII, I suggest that you fly the regular combat aircraft that do work well.

This is a war game simulation + a WWII combat flight simulator, not a flight simulator for training in old unarmed biplanes.

Enjoy the air combat first. BoBII is famous for having excellent behaving Artificial Intelligence, and is a real good challenge for a single player to fight the AI.

If you need to practice taking off and landing, then start with the Hurricane or the ME110. They are easy stable aircraft.

So, any idea what you might have done to rid yourself off the crashes?

Alas, you won't see the updates to Bournemouth, until 2.13 comes out.
You could take a cruise on the other side of the channel, and take a
peek at Dunkerque, which I improved for 2.12. It is still awaiting ground
objects, though. We don't have any volunteers these days to do
object placement on the new terrain, and Dunkerque would be a huge
job. Ditto for Bournemouth, the terrain is sculpted, but there are no
buildings. I can show a pic preview pic; the original Rowan terrain
is missing the seaside cliff, and all the chines, which you can sort of
see here:

The strips running out into the water are markers for the location of the
pavilion piers, so they can be oriented accurately when they get placed.

Hi
I am not sure what did it - I can only assume that although I reloaded it several times previously something nasty was lurking about which didn't go till I had a thorough 'deep clean' of C Drive!
I note your comments re the TM!
Your work on Bournemouth looks great & an improvement to French side would be good. I note that Calais is rather lacking in buildings etc but without volunteers to do the work its difficult. I wish I knew about programming!
BTW I saw in one of the threads something about bailing out & parachuting - is that available? I could certainly do with it!
I am ok flying the Spit on auto but I realise how difficult it is to fly in 'reality' mode - its so sensitive & subject to wind movement etc! I guess I need to get the hang of take off, landing & circuits etc before I go too far

I've never actually gotten around to trying the Moth, as I was a bit daunted
by the time required for the process of getting it loaded and removed, and
of course pretty much all my BoB time is spent modding. I gather though that
it is a pleasant enough experience, just that your sim is reduced to exclusively
a training and sightseeing sim while you've got the TM on board.
Your work on Bournemouth looks great & an improvement to French side would be good. I note that Calais is rather lacking in buildings etc but without volunteers to do the work its difficult. I wish I knew about programming!
Actually, object placement doesn't require any programming skill, just a tremendous
amount of patience and attention to detail. We have a placement mode built in to
the sim, which when activated allows you to call up building objects, shuffle them around
and park them on the terrain. The ObjectAdds folder in your BoB2 install is full of files
built by this process. Each line of text, about fifty bytes, represents one object placed
by this method, and the folder is about 4MB, so that represents about 80,000 objects
hand placed. It is not quite as bad as that, as a set of templates have been developed
which allow the placement of a swath of 20 or 30 buildings at a time, fitted to town
terrain textures, though often those placements may have to be edited further as the
extent of the template doesn't match the extent of the texture in the particular instance.
So it probably represents perhaps 5000 individual placement steps, by heroic volunteers,
over the last six years since we developed the process.
BTW I saw in one of the threads something about bailing out & parachuting - is that available? I could certainly do with it!
Yes, I guess it is a holdover from Rowan's Mig Alley that it is labelled Eject, and
defaults to the E key. Also, the manual uses "eject", and "bail" - the alternate spelling -
so you won't find it searching for "bale".
I am ok flying the Spit on auto but I realise how difficult it is to fly in 'reality' mode - its so sensitive & subject to wind movement etc! I guess I need to get the hang of take off, landing & circuits etc before I go too far

As Stickman notes, the Hurricane is much less twitchy for starting out.
I was never able to get a Spit off the ground until I had succeeded a
dozen times in the Hurri.

Hi PV
Having read your description of what goes into placement I am even more impressed! The detail of Woolston in Southampton where the Supermarine factory is is great especially the Art Deco design office - I knew this area well unfortunately most of it has been demolished and redeveloped but the massive factory building fronting the water is still there you can see it on Goole Earth about 700 yards north of the Itchen Bridge
Thanks for info re bailing out - I will give it a try
I will also swap to the Hurricane - getting off the ground is not too bad albeit that I am frequently untidy! It's landing which is causing me grief but I think I need to plan my approaches better and resist the temptation to slam it on the ground in the final phase. I see that there is some good advice on the forum which I need to read up on.
One thing I have a prob with at the moment is despite having the canopy open on landing I don't seem able to poke my head outside the cockpit as I was able to do previously ( I use TrackIR). Any thoughts on what might be causing this?
Best Regards
MM
