Moderate oil consumption is part of the normal lubrication process for aircraft combustion engines (unlike many of today's automobile engines). The Lycoming 360 in your Cessna 172R/S, for example, can consume as much as a quart every several hours of operation (while typical consumption rates tend to be somewhere between 1 quart every 8 to 12 hours or so). Oil consumption can also change with different grades of oil, power settings, and climates.
So unlike your car, with an aircraft it's important to check your oil before every flight.
Here is an engine with about 45 hours since the last oil change. You shouldn't let the oil level get this low (our local shop adds oil when it reaches 5 quarts).
We added two quarts to get us home safely.
Since it was a long flight home, we changed both the oil and filter the next morning. It's important to change both the oil and the filter at the recommended intervals as older oil doesn't lubricate as well as fresh oil. This is modeled in Accu-Sim. But keep in mind, the engine isn't going to seize up even if you run it way beyond the recommended oil change interval, but those parts that rely on engine oil lubrication will wear and / or corrode faster just like they do in the real engine. There is nothing quite like checking the oil after a fresh new oil change and filter.
This is just one but important aspect of life with your Accu-Sim Cessna 172. More to come.
Scott.

This is really exciting! It will be amazing to have a 172 that is so thoroughly and accurately modeled and that requires maintenance to keep it running properly; for me, it's an FSX dream come true. Thanks for the updates, Scott. Keep them coming!

"Unlike today's automobile engines," I don't think my Audi TT read this bit.

OK, I'm not usually a general aviation guy, but this depth of management REALLY gets me stoked for the Cessna!
ALL THE A2A PLANES!!!
Re: Managing the engine oil on the Accu-Sim C172
Im glad after 20 hours my engine has not used up any oil! Just overhauled though.
Im not sure if I understand but Accusim will add oil after it gets under 5 quarts?
Cant Wait for this plane.

I love how even the oil colour changes from light yellow when topped up with fresh oil to dirty brown when running low... Do you get the choice of viscosity levels for different conditions?
I want this to be released SO bad right now...

If that was the 172 I normally fly it would have dumped out all that oil to bring the level around 6.5 quartsScott - A2A wrote:
