Is BFO function still useful?

Post by ilya1502 »

There are so many people on this forum who fly in every corner of the world. In this case, the real world I mean. Maybe you know, are there still NDBs which transmit their signal as an unmodulated carrier wave? This is the kind of a signal which requires utilisation of BFO function to make the station morse code audible.

The reason why I ask is that I am currently busy with preparing a document for work which has to deal with the use of an ADF, and the previous version of the doc (which is only a couple of years old) still describes the BFO function use and test. I think about removing the whole section on the BFO, since the ADF itself is a slowly dying means of navigation in the nowadays world, but I can see that the BFO function is still available even on the most recent ADF installations. Is it just "by inertia" so to say, or it can really be utilised somewhere?
