Bonanza BETA: 18.7.1 - Cylinder Durability & Oil Consumption

Post by FAC257 »

Scott,

Just got to the 40hr. flight mark with 7.1 using a new zero hour engine. The chart/image below has all the stats at each hour plus notes on Oil usage.

Each flight identical:
-Standard atmosphere static weather.
-MTOW
-Cruise Alt @ 9000' 21"MP @ 2100RPM.
-25" @ 2500RPM immediately after TO. Maintained at 25" during climb until unable to hold. Then MP allowed to drop naturally during climb to 21".
-Cowl Flaps full open until established at cruise alt.
-Mixture full rich until established at crusie alt.

All Cruise Settings & Temps on image below.
Image

Notes:
Just landed for the evening with complete C&D shutdown. 40.6 hours showing in the MH, and so far no internal engine components have gone yellow or red during the entire flight so far.

Although the compression test numbers are hanging tough, it does look like the oil consumption rate is gradually getting faster.

Throughout the test period, the only faulty gauge I noticed is the Flaps Gauge.

I was hoping to get to have 50 hours on this aircraft by tonight, but that was an almost. :)

Notes:
-First engine component (Oil Lines) failing report in the MH at 51.0 hours.

I moved the above posts into the Pilot's Lounge just to show just one small example of the work that our beta testers do before a product makes it to the market. This was posted by FAC257, and he has been tracking wear and tear on many items, this being one of his posts. Just look at his organization of this post - it's top class beta testing.

This is the kind of dedication that means that on day one, A2A products are already battle tested. Our beta team does the work squashing hundreds of bugs so our customers don't have too. Instead, the A2A customer can just jump in and fly and enjoy the experience instead of experiencing problems.

What Forests post does is confirm what our internal testing tools are telling us. Nothing replaces real world testing, as that is what it all boils down too. And Forest has caught MANY bugs that have slipped by.

While no software is perfect or free of bugs, it's because of the hard work of our testers, like Forest, that A2A is what it is.

Outstanding work Scott and the beta testers but I do have one question will the V35B have 3 available engines to pick from?

Hi Greg,

When we began working on the Bonanza, we were planning on making an earlier version that would have come with a Continental 470 as a base, but moved to the latest model the V35B. So instead of three engines we have two engines available for the V35B - Continental 520 285hp and Continental 550 300hp

When I get mine I'm going right to the IO-550N 300HP engine and if that is not enough then it's onto the TSIO-550 315HP engine

We understand there are severe limits to what can be shared, but it's nice to have these insights into the development process. Really adds to our appreciation of the end product. Keep them coming... if and when you can...

"Malfunctioning gauge" very interesting! Thank you Scott and beta team, I start a new job on the 13th of August so any day now would be just fine.

Wow that’s a lot of keeping track of things. But I guess that’s what’s you have to do in order to get the product tested thoroughly.

Thanks for sharing this very interesting insight.

As a software test manager I can see that Forest is organised, logical thinking and can present the findings really well. Superb testing there.

The product is a day one purchase for me no matter what, but looking at the sneak previews of some new features, I can already tell I will not be disappointed.

My team of testers so not get much recognition by the business, so seeing the response from Scott, with support from the community is great.

Keep up the good work testers!
Jim

Nice. :)

I wonder if there are any particulars of the engine modeling that are new for the Bonanza.

I'd say that's a good call. :) The IO-550 can be thought as an IO-520 with increased piston stroke, thereby having slightly increased displacement and maybe more interestingly, higher compression ratio. By the time I gained some little practical knowledge of these engine series, the IO-520 models had tendency to have some issues with their valves (inlet valves included) due to bad metallurgy, plus they were consistently cracking their cylinders in higher-power variants. Curiously, the individual IO-550s I knew something of did not seem to have these tendencies.
