Deer on Short Final

Post by DatDudeMIC »

So I was coming in on runway 08 at 11S. Everything was looking good, airspeed (check), altitude (check). As I was getting ready to pull power and start my flare, I was greeted with this

Image

Yes, a deer crossing the runway. Now I know I should of retracted the flaps and went around, but i didn't want to deal with it again. So I added some power to clear it, and then landed. I missed my aiming point though.

Hehe that happened to me too in 11S. And if you taxi past them they’re some tall deer!

Possibly caribou. Or reindeer depending on where you live. They can grow to be 5 feet tall at the shoulder. Currently the only caribou in the US are in northern Idaho, according to wiki.

Is that stock scenery or Orbx?

That’s Orbx Sekiu for Orbx PNW. Great piece of scenery if you ask me.

Thanks, Piper_EEWL.

I had another question: The zoom level appears to be 0.8 in the pic. Is that what you normally use, or was that just for the screen shot?

I use TrackIR with that zoom level for all my cockpit views because it makes the instruments look about life size. Scenery out the window is impressive as well. I started using that level of zoom after going on a real life flight and noticing how big the runway looked on approach. I can't imagine doing this without TrackIR's ability to look around the cockpit.

Heidi's head in the Cub looks a bit big, but that's because she would be closer in an actual Cub than my monitor is. :D

Ugh, they do that to me at 65S too. Last time it happened I was already down and one of them ran in front of me. At least I was able to treat everyone who helped me pick up the debris to a steak dinner.

No. It was just for the screen shot, I normally fly zoomed all the way out

Do they eventually move away with that scenery? Or does the plane “scare” them away? I’m curious how orbx has them programmed

The one that’s on the runway moves around in pattern. The one next to the runway is stationary. And no they don’t react to the aircraft unfortunately.

Deer on the runway is pretty cool. This happens to me a lot at ORBX 65S Bonners Ferry.
