Texture resolution: 2048x2048 and 4096x4096

Texture resolution: 2048x2048 and 4096x4096

Post by Simicro »

Hi,

In this thread, Nick explains that:
The Bonanza features high-resolution (4096 x 4096 pixels) texture sheets for the virtual cockpit and external texturing.
I followed the recommandation and my rig can handle it. Overall, with my P3D settings, I get 50-70fps. I tried to lower the texture resolution to 2048 x 2048 and could barely see the difference in the cockpit. All is still sharp. I have a 2K monitor.

What is your experience?

It seems to me that most of the time, addons textures (aircrafts and sceneries) are 2048 x 2048, only a few do have 4096 x 4096. Is that correct?

I can definitely tell the difference between the two. While 2048 is fine, my eyes need all the help they can get, so I always choose 4096, just a tad clearer. No hit on performance at all.

How does one interpret this setting?

For those using 4K monitors, that setting can increase the size of the VC popups to make them readable.

I understand/interpret the same as patful.

By the way, patful, I forgot to say that I did not see noticeable impact on fps going from 2048 to 4096 either, at least on my system. Thanks for confirming me in my observation.

It would be nice if that feature was made available in other aircraft. I just got a 4k screen but it's not really practical with the Spitfire for instance. There is a thread here somewhere that says how to fiddle with the panel.cfg file to achieve this, but not everyone is comfortable doing that.

Fact is. I need to be able to scale up my centre screen. Something I can't do with Windows 7 without messing up my other two. I believe this is possible in Windows X but I was hoping to postpone that move for a couple more years.

Steve.
