I was worrying about this for a while though.The story came out a month ago but I wasn't certain until now when I saw the story.I myself am planning on getting Vista Ultimate Edition probably in 2009.So unless your planning on building or buying a new PC soon your current PC will have patches for another 7 years.

Yes, but I do not believe DirectX v10 will ever be available for XP. So, people will be required to move to Vista for this purpose alone.
