Turbos

Post by danb12 »

Hi,

I recently read an article in a magazine about nine-o-nine in America and I noticed that they mentioned that the turbos are in op... just wondered if you haf to use them on the A2A B-17 or whether this would cause damage?

The EAA B17 Aluminum Overcast also has non-op turbos.

You don't need to use the turbos (power will be reduced and ceiling will be reduced) but I would have to ask, why wouldn't you use turbos?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I am aware other operators do not use them either, I was just curious, I always use them, but mainly fly VDR under 5K so wondered if I needed to use them... obviously take ofi is easier with them...

Somewhere on the boards here I believe this topic was discussed. AIR, the turbos were not
used primarily to avoid maintenance issues...less items to break/worry about.

Also, the turbos are not needed for the flight levels these 'show birds' fly from one location
to the next.

Cool thanks for that Paul, would not using them in the sim have a negative effect? I will continue using them but just curious!

I use the turbos all the time and I have over 1200 hours on my B-17G. I have had a runaway turbo on occasion
but no other issues. I typically climb to 21K to 25K when flying missions online with the 91st Bombardment Group
and turbos are essential 'up there'.

Danb12,

I can't think of any reason why NOT using them would have any negative effects, aside from the reduction in performance.

OK cool, was just curious as I don't fly over 5000ft so wasn't sure if I needed to use them, will continue as it's good to fly as you should!

One important difference, our B17 has the full weight of the armor and other things that have usually been removed from the show planes. So you aren't going to get the same performance as the real guys are without turbos.

A good comparison is the a2a b377 and b377 super guppy. The super guppy lacks turbos.
