Campaign Raid Walkthrough

Post by PutCashIn »

Hello, welcome to the Day 1 Raid 1 German Campaign Walkthrough.

Please take your time to install, fly and become familiar with crashing in burning flames using single instant action missions. Also familiarize yourself with the host of options and play values, particularly the campaign difficulty. Setting the Luftwaffe to High or the RAF to Poor may help in your first campaign attempts. The following is with defaults, sorry about the images they are 1440x900 turned into Jpg’s….a right mess.

We select Campaign, Luftwaffe, Commander TesterPete ( :) ), Begin.

We are then faced with this monstrosity:

Image

Which we defeat with a few deft clicks of the mouse:

Image

Above we have allotted all our bombers to the morning (now), rearranged our escorts to suit tastes, remained with 0 recon and set all out aircraft to ’rest.’

Upon clicking Rest All, or the Upper Right Tick (or X even), we are questioned by the SS:

Image

We assure the good UnterOffizer we don’t intend to slacken off, but we click the tick behind his back (try the X. Loop : See Loop) anyway.
Wasting time is a sin, unless it’s on BOB2:WOV, so we PASUE:

Image

From now on, a lot of what we are going to do will be a one off, unless we start a new Campaign.
We click on Control, next to Pause:

Image

Highlighted are my settings, the same with the next Tab, FLY (which determines when a SS OffiZZer asks if you’re going to ‘man up’ and Frag into, er, 4D)

Image

Returning to the Campaign Map, we click on our first big icon: FILTERS (Nah bro, look in the glove box)

Image

We select some of the more important targets

We click our second big button: Resources. This shows all the units, in group(pen)s of about 30, although with careful maintenance and preservation you can get them to 50. (the Button to the Left, called ‘Aircraft Allocation’ shows where your off-screen production is going. Ignore it all except the RATE PER WEEK. Also note the Ju87 Diver Bomber does not get resupplied, although damaged aircraft making it home will be repaired.

Image

Note that the Bombers (Kampf) listed, 3xDo17’s, are recon (the <> arrows indicate this) only. Bombers start getting reassigned to your control about day 3.

Also note we only have 3xMe109’s (fighters), 3xJu87’s (dive bombers) and 3x Bf110’s (twin engine bombers). Level (Medium) Bombers will come later.

Luckily, we have a real life example of how not to attack Britain.
So, we ignore the convoys (for now) and click on our first victim of the campaign, Foreness CHL:

Image

Cue the ‘Mwhahahahahaha’ :

Mwhahahahahahaha!!! We click on Authorize, coz we is da bozz (go da Orks!)

Image

The game has given us a default assault mission on Foreness CHL. Any changes we make to this flight will become default for the next attack mission on a CHL…very handy!

We double click on the top line, Dive Bomb, alternatively click on task, to see the default flight composition:

Image

We make the following changes (Basically I have selected 1 grouppen of Bf110’s, with no escorts)

Image

I highly recommend not exiting these windows by using the tick, get used to using the Task button and the Big Button ‘Mission Folder.’
Sweet, now we have our first raid initiated, further more we could now click on another target and get a result of 1 gruppen of Bf110’s, Unescorted. Let’s make further use of this memory feature first. Note the routes to and from the target (Egress is on the way out, Dogleg and Initial Point are on the way in)

Image

We change these to something a little less suicidal by ‘drag and dropping’ the round waypoint markers:

Image

Arriving at:

Image

Unfortunately, these route changes on the map aren’t always ‘remembered,’ but the next part is. We want to change the altitude to something more along the lines of a surprise attack. If anyone knows how to get lower (other than where it’s all at 0…I’m too scared to Frag into that) please post a reply so I can learn too!

We click on Missions, Routes, then double click one of the INNER waypoints, click on the 15,000 ft setting and change this to 2000ft, then click APPLY ALT. Arriving at something like this, sans squiggly lines:

Image

Right, all set.

We assign a new default flight to Manston AF, then Dover Docks. Clicking Authorize on Dover CH, the game will automatically assign a Ju87 Gruppen, as we have no more available Bf110s.

Clicking Authorize on Hawkinge and Lymp, er, place will now assign Ju87s.

THEN, we assign 1 gruppen of Me109s to Attached Escort to one of the Ju87 flights by using the TASK button on the appropriate line (look for the type and target) in the Missions folder. We continue to exhaust available fighters by assigning them to Ju87 flights.

In this screenshot I have almost used all the available aircraft, by allotting them in different order you can achieve different results (Don’t blame Shockwave, it’s to do with the German love of 3’s):

Image

Now we run our planned attack (to see the order, click Missions and note Time Out is leaving the airfield and Time over Target is when the bombs are dropped) by Un pausing the game, single arrow gives normal time, double arrow ‘non raid speed’ until a raid takes off, the ‘raid speed’ thereafter (see Screen Shot 5 above), here we have raids going in and out, with RAF fighters engaging ours at about Pink Square:

Image

Here, our Ju87s are either returning, red arrows to France, or home and landing @ yellow circle. Bf110’s are inbound to targets with red arrows and 3 RAF squadrons have taken out 3 of our Bf109’s, now outnumbered at Pink Square. Damaged targets are outlined in red:

Image

After everyone run out of gas and goes home, we arrive at a happy morning view of Dover Burning:

Image

Now all our resources except for the recon Do17’s are ‘tired’ (the brackets () indicate this), so we await the next Directives Tab (appears next at 11:00 hours) to see if we have any more resources. Or we get rid the screen altogether by clicking big button Directives ON/OFF.

Generally, I look at each time segment and decide if I have enough resources to mount any raids, or if I have insufficient numbers or troop morale and I should await another day/time segment…..

Remember you can FRAG into any single aircraft for some real fun, even bomber gunner positions! Good Luck!

PS: In hindsight, please note that changeing the escort dutys as I have in ScreenShot 2 above only affects the missions auto generated by the directives menu, above I have then used the manual mission generation process - changing the escort dutys for these missions requires using the Missions>Task>bombers/attached/detached/return Tabs and the checkbox's therin.
