35.000ft and feeling great, throttle not even close to the firewall... (but that stupid turbo bearing - otherwise we really could go hunt some jets)

This plane is fascinating!

Yes, the turbo really sets it apart from so many of it's supercharged brethren.

Great plane to learn how to use and engage the turbo properly. When I first started flying this plane I blew a lot of turbos engaging them incorrectly. I could of been nicknamed "Blown Turbo"!
Anyway, she is a fun airplane to fly and manage.

Keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down!

Hm... out of interest: how do you guys manage that? Ignore the turbo redline?

It's easy when you fly the P-51 etc for long periods and then Go back to the 47 to forget some of the more Manual nuances though the same can be said and perhaps to an even greater extent for the P-40 too.

Thanks,
Lewis

Interesting... I'm very conscious of the engine limits in the Jug, even after 'time off'. I do wonder though - it's all nice and good sitting at the computer, having little to worry about, but having to fight for your life at the same time, after hours sitting in that thing with the noise and vibration and maneuvering... tipping my head to anyone who fought in the wars.

I did blow her up once, intentionally, to see what would happen. That was a very painful flight for me (... and the Jug), won't do that again.

Indeed Dooga, flying these things can be hard enough without adding combat into the mix. Have you tried flying a mission type flight yet? They can be very rewarding to help you experience and understand even a fraction of what it must have been like.

Thanks,
Lewis

If you push the turbo lever further forward than the throttle, it's "Good Bye Turbo"!. Once I learned that fact, I stopped blowing turbos! I use to engage the turbo without thinking about throttle placement when I first started to learn to fly the P-47 and I was blowing a lot of turbos; then I read the manual and got that Oh Yeh moment as the light in my little pea brain came on!

Ah, see - I treat A2A planes like real-world ones, i.e. I read the manual before first flight ;-)

Some times if your stealing an A2A airplane you have no time to read the manual. You just jump into the plane and go! Hahahahahaha

I'm not sure about others, but I've always run out of throttle before I start engaging the turbo. In other words, I use my throttle to maintain the desires MP until such a time that it cannot be maintained through the throttle (in other words, it's firewalled at altitude). From that point on, I operate my turbo like a throttle above that altitude. From there I just make sure I don't run KT past the redline on the turbo gauge. Are others doing it differently?

I'm doing it the unimaginative way - above that altitude that's mentioned in the manual but which I forgot right now (~7000ft?) I pull back the throttle, link it up with the turbo lever, and then move both together to get the MP I want.

I like having another 40,000ft aircraft in the fleet.
