Mesmerizing in-flight video - Spitfire Mk1 P9374

Post by graaant »

The BBC/Christie's have just posted a great in-flight video of the recently-restored Spitfire Mk1 P9374 here:

Hard to take one's eyes off the beautiful creature ...

Also an interview with the restorer:

Enjoy!

Cheers,
Grant

During my walkabout here in London today I saw that Spit on display outside the Churchill War Rooms entrance. Took a few pix but haven't uploaded them to anywhere but my FB account so far.

Well... I've decided to paint P9374. When it's finished I will no doubt, put it on my site.

BTW, going to the Wales National Air Show this weekend. I hope the weather stays fairly clear.

It has sold for £3,106,500 ($4,796,436)...a staggering/unprecedented sum for a Spitfire.

@bladeruner900 - looking forward to that paint.

@Bomber12th - any information on the buyer, or hasn't that been disclosed?

Alan, no public information yet on the owner. All of the funds from the sale are going straight to charity, which is also incredible.

As seen in the prior screenshot, the file A2A WoP3 'Dunkirk Spitfires'.zip in the file library at Sim-Outhouse contains a repaint of the restored P9374 for the A2A WOPIII/Accu-Sim Spitfire.

Some screenshots of Brad's repaint of P9374, on an epic flight this evening. Tomorrow marks the 75th Anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Britain - P9374 never took part in the Battle of Britain, though it was involved in the Battle of France. It was while in action on May 24, 1940, the aircraft was hit by enemy gunfire and made a forced landing on the Calais beach, where it remained until 1980.

Apologies to Brad - I'd completely vapor-locked about the Dunkirk Spits package. Nice to have choices - Brad's, and also bladerunner900's new version, which (to my eye) looks a bit glossier - ready for show, vs. in-service.

Of course, my favorite Mk I ride remains bladerunner's 3071, which takes up a lot of my flying hours these days.

@Bomber_12th - wonderful screenshots. FSX or P3D?

Thank you Alan. The screenshots are from FSX, though just about unrecognizable as such, with REX and ORBX covering everything (I don't use any addon shader/lighting programs/effects). Brad's Dunkirk Spitfire package of repaints is quite unique, in that it covers all four of the Mk.I Spitfires that were recovered around the same time from the Calais beach in the early 80's - including both P9374 and N3200, which have since been completed/flown, as well as P9372 and P9373, which are either still stored or are under restoration to fly. The repaints depict all of them as being freshly restored. The repaints do have too much gloss/reflection for my liking (the restored P9374 and N3200 don't have any gloss/reflection in their paint finish, but rather a very nice sheen/"egg shell" type look) - the gloss/reflective properties of the textures are however less noticeable on early morning and late evening flights. ; )

Here are some more shots from the same memorable flight.

Hi,

Thanks for the kind words regarding the Dunkirk Spits...if you remove the files in the texture.p9374 file so you only have the thumbnail, Spit, Spit Spec and the text file, the paints revert to a more matt finish.

Thanks for making it look so good, Mr. 12th too!

Brad
A Spitfire arrived around the end of the hangar at near enough 10ft slaloming though the dispersal pylons. He then landed, got out in a waist coat and suit trousers, unfold a suit jacket from the luggage hold and put it on. He was Sqn Ldr Ray Hanna.
