3-25-18 Group Flight: RENO AIR RACES

Post by Mustang472218 »

Racing at 4SD this Sunday on The Skylounge JoinFS server. T-6 and/or Unlimited class races with add-on scenery!

I propose we meet on the ramp of 4SD at 1930Z (2:30 P.M. CST) to prepare our mighty machines and pre-warm the engines. Thoughts on doing qualifying runs, anyone?

Take off and join into an echelon formation at 2000Z, establishing an entry pattern for the race course and when we're all comfortable, drop into the course from about 2,000ft AGL. 6-8 laps around the course, as per the real deal.

Let me know what you all think! 8)

Here's something else for a little background: http://www.racingt-6.org/.

Also, http://www.racingt-6.org/member-only-info/.

I wonder if they run totally wide open throttle? Wonder how long the engine can take full throttle operation? I read somewhere in the Tech Specs that 2,250 rpm is recommended.

I fully expect that we will be racing our T-6s in accordance with the 'Classic' tech specs (see Sections XIX through XXVIII of the T-6 Technical Specifications).

I ran a few circuits this evening in the T-6 with MP and RPM on the stops and she checked out OK afterwards. Compression virtually the same, but I did burn a gallon of oil.

Page 13 gives a nice description of each course. Although I'm not entirely positive that we'll get a constant 250 MPH out of our T-6s.

According to the tech specs of the T6 Racing Association, 2250 RPM is the SUGGESTED max. I'm going to say that MP is open to interpretation. :P

I think the engines will be fine, although I'm not sure if we should race with a lean mixture of full rich? I would think that with a high power setting we want to keep the engine cool.

I've been trying to figure out the flying procedure for the T-6 race. Here's what I've got so far:

1. Take off from Rwy 08 at approximately 10-second intervals.
2. Turn to north and climb to about 2,000 ft AGL and form up in line abreast or echelon formation IRL we'd be following the pace airplane.
3. Follow green route southward toward course while descending to race altitude of 50 to 200 feet AGL. IRL as we turned in to parallel Rwy 08-26 the pace plane would climb out and the race would be on as we pass the home pylon.
4. Start is West to East, parallel to Rwy 08-26, between pylons and north edge of Rwy 08-26.
5. Race is six laps counterclockwise around T-6 course.
6. Start/Finish line is from Home Pylon perpendicular to Rwy 08-26.
7. After finishing the race, climb to approximately 2,000 ft AGL, cool down your engine, then set up for left pattern to Rwy 08.

I got this info from reading the rule books, watching YouTube videos, etc. I've never been to the Reno Air Races, so I could be missing something. Please correct me if I've got it wrong. Meanwhile, here is an illustration of what I believe is the T-6 race course (blue) with start route (green):

I think that is a great plan. I found one video on-board a T-6 during the race and it only shows them following the pace plane over what is presumably Cold Springs which correlates perfectly with what you have posted. I think we should go for it! :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p54Fw09Q7zE

Found this the other day:

It gives some idea of the procedures.

Download link updated with new instructions in readme.txt. This is now a four part scenery package. One part is base components (Static aircraft, home pylon, tents, crowds, grand-stands, etc), parts 2-4 are each separate race courses (Unlimited, Sport, T-6). Please update scenery at your earliest convenience in anticipation for tomorrow's group flight. Happy flying!
