I was not familiar with the P-40 in the ETO but this has made for some interesting reading.
Not only about 404 making do with ancient light bombers but also 414 squadron which flew P-40s as well as Lysanders during this time as the 414 Army Co-operation Squadron and participated in the Dieppe battle. I had never heard of this type of squadron either. Later they flew P-51s and Spits.
If they had flown the P-47 then they would have had the A2A Accusim fighters covered!

I wonder if this fellow is the source of the 404 confusion.
