Hi,

I'm a bit mixed up by A2A's mixture setting requirement for engine start.

The 1943 Pilot Training Manual for the P-40 (applicable to the P-40A thru D with the Allison V-1710-19 engine), suggests engaging the starter, and then advancing the mixture to auto-rich when the engine fires. The same case has been true for many aircraft I've glanced over.

This method of starting doesn't work on the P-40 though. The engine fails to turn over when feeding it fuel as it fires. Just wondering why A2A has this style of engine start implemented.

Thanks!

As long as the aircraft is primed properly, with a crack of throttle, you can indeed start the engine with the mixture in cut-off and feed her mixture when she catches. The main reason that has been explained to me that you started with engine mixture in cut off was for fires.

Doesn't work for me at all. The mixture *must* be on auto-rich from the start. The engine won't even try to fire for any more than a second either.

What are the weather conditions? Also, how much are you priming it? Lastly, are you utilizing the wobble pump to charge the lines?

Weather being used is the fair preset. 15 degrees C, dry.

I prime it about 4 strokes for a cold engine.

Yes I'll use the wobble pump until I get about 5-6 lbs.

[Edit]

I've finally started getting it to work. There's really no indication that the engine is firing but if you move the mixture immediately after you engage the starter it'll work.

I always start in idle-cutoff, just using the priming pump. you can keep her alive with only the priming pump.

Do you have auto-mixture turned off in FSX settings? This is described in the manual.
