So, I am planning on loading up my Aleutian Tiger P-40 where she is currently based in Dutch Harbor , AK and bring her back home to the states. Has any one tried to ferry a P40 this route before and have any suggestions of areas to avoid? I know it will involve many fueling stops, but it should be a fun diversion from some of the other flying I have been doing. Just thought it would be interesting to see how long it might have taken to bring back an old old warbird back in the day after the war was over.
Thanks, Chris

Never seen that one attempted in the P-40, it'd be an interesting route for sure?

Re: Alaska back home to USA route?
Lewis, I have the route mostly done on paper. Using my maps and online fight planning software to back it up I just need the time to fly the route now. It will be broken down into multiple short hops of 1-1 1/2 flights. If leaned correctly should be more than manageable.
Thanks, Chris

Re: Alaska back home to USA route?
I've taken similar routes many times, and flown around Alaska in real life. I'd suggest making for Anchorage, or there about, hitting Valdez, Juneau, Ketchican, then moving south on the coast. The weather is going to be trash no matter what, especially this time of year it's very unpredictable, but we are talking Alaska here. Make your way to the San Juans. For a safer trip move to the interior and go through Canada, as those mountain ranges block some of that weather. It'll be a longer trip however.

Re: Alaska back home to USA route?
Thanks Cody, I began yesterday morning after I left work. Flew about an hour before needing to get to sleep between shifts. Going to try to do some more of the route this weekends between my son's ball game and chores.. I decided to take the coastal route with live weather so we have been scud running a bit. First leg is Dutch Harbor to Kodiac. I will then check the weather for the next leg to make the long over water leg or head inland to escapes further weather. I hope to end up in Montana at the end of the journey. Should be fun none the less. The winds were really bucking me around in the dawn takeoff with rain up to 4500 but then I was between layers.. we shall see how the remainder goes.
Appreciate the response!

Re: Alaska back home to USA route?
Lewis, yes I will. Maybe after I leave work in the morning or tomorrow afternoon. I will give a projected route of what I am hoping to accomplish and where I actually fly depending on weather or scenery oppurtunity.
Thanks, Chris

Re: Alaska back home to USA route?
Lewis, and anyone else interested. Here is my proposed route. I have already begun the flight from Dutch Harbor, Unalaska(PADU), and enroute to Kodiak(PADQ)530 miles. From Kodiak this is the intended route:
PADU-PADQ Dutch Harbor to Kadiak
PADQ-PAED 217mi Kodiak to Anchorage
PAED-CYXY 434mi Anch to Whitehorse
CYXY-CYYE 392mi Whitehorse to Ft. Nelson
CYYE-CYXD 435mi Ft. Nelson to Edmonton City Center
CYXD-KGFA 374mi Ed City Ctr to Malmstrom AFB, Great Falls, MT
KGFA-KHFI 385mi Malmstrom AFB TO Hill AFB, Ogden, UT
All distances are approx. using Plan G software, there is no reason for this other than a little fun and an idea that many aircraft were returned along a similar route after the war. My Aleutian Tiger is a C model with the belly tank so I can fly longer than the pilots virtual bladder. Which is why I tried to choose the routes to keep the flights between 1.5-3 hours. That was how we used to fly to many airshows. Warbirds shake and vibrate so much your bladder is never happy!! Lol
If you wish to try this route feel free, or modify per your needs. If you flew this in the B-17 or B377 it would be completely different. This is primarily for single engine fighter type or maybe the twins(C-47,C-45,C-46,PV2's, etc).
Cheers, Chris

Re: Alaska back home to USA route?
Yes Lewis. Before the flight I load real weather. Makes it a little more challenging in the Alaskan environment. Winds on the ground have been avg 20-30 kts gusting and 50-60 kts gusting in the air depending on altitude.
Cheers, Chris
