Does anyone feel like tackling this one, right out of the factory P-51 with only slight exhaust staining and the painted grey wings with flaps polished aluminum.

Very nice, I'd love to see this one done, although there is a very similar paint out there already. This particular plane I will hopefully see for the first time this summer at Geneseo, where it just confirmed its appearance with pilot Andrew McKenna.

EDIT: Here is the repaint, I believe it was one of ICDP's original official repaints released for the Military version. Here I've applied it to the civilian version and used a different .env file and changed the wheel wells and cockpit etc. The main difference to the aircraft you requested, besides the number, is the back glare shield instead of green. Otherwise pretty close!

IIRC it is included in the zip file (the second link), the official skin pack for the P-51D.

Well, I have to start somewhere so I thought I'd start with a simple one. Have a look at this and see if it fills your requirements.

I like it already; most of the repaints I have make me feel like I'm flying "somebody else's Mustang". Now I feel like I'm flying "somebody's Mustang", but it could, theoretically, be mine. ;)

Thanks guys. Turns out, it ain't so simple after all. Not being a true colour, but more a lighting effect, getting a silver look is quite difficult. But I'm picking up all sorts of info about what does what in alpha transparencies and such. :)

Great work!! Dont forget the zinc chromate in the wheel wells and the painted silver wings. When 51's left the factory they had painted silver wings and once in the field it would gradually wear off. Great work so far!!!

Would that be green, or perhaps a sort of mustard yellow?

The zinc chromate stuff is usually green, however sometimes yellow in color. Although the new water based primer/corrosion coatings are also yellow now. So the green is usually a good indicator you have the real deal. Hate the new stuff cause if you do not immediately paint the aircraft within the specified window after apply the primer it just peels right off after the first few check flights.

On a side note though that repaint looks really good. Never really thought about a bare metal P-51. Just have the bare skin P-40 for the time being. May have to get that one though.

Okay. That being the case, technically, either option would be correct. So with that in mind I have updated the download with both options. So now it is up to the individual to decide which to go for. Of course, if none is selected then you get the global grey/silver finish. This too would also be correct if the owner decides to paint over the zinc chromate.

Awesome stuff!!! The paint on the wings was a flat silver paint and the flaps and ailerons were kept bare aluminum if that helps you out any! I'll try to find some pictures for you. Bob Bakers 51's have the correct style paint on the wings those being Sweet and Lovely and Lil Rebel

I've updated the wings, flaps and ailerons. The wings are as close to silver as I can get and the flaps and ailerons are bare metal with the same finish as the fuselage. I had a look at Sweet and Lovely for texture comparison. Although it doesn't look it in the picture, the horizontal stabilisers and elevators are also the same bare metal finish as the fuselage. The angle of the sun doesn't show them properly in the picture.

The download now gives you this.

My question is, are the stabilisers and elevators bare metal, or are they supposed to be silver as well?

Based on what I've seen with restorations from Midwest Aero and a note from Jim Beasley, both the elevator and the stabilisers are bare aluminum. The rudders on the D and K model mustangs are fabric so that would have the appearance of a dull painted fabric silver. Excellent, excellent work!!!
