Starting proceedure for the P51D Mustang- Mil and Civ.

Post by trucker17 »

For anyone who needs to know how to start the A2A P51D Mustang.
First watch this video from A2A.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUOmJzxoaCA

This procedure will also work on the Military Mustang.
For this I will be using the A2A WOP3 with ACCUSIM P51D, done in the Fear This paint by Eightyfiftyfive.

SET THE BRAKES.
First you want to do a check of your planes Fluids.
To do this start FSX, go to VIEWS, Scroll down to Instrument Panel, then scroll to Payload and fuel manager, Click to open it.
From here you can check and Fill your fuel tanks, Check and fill your oil level and type. Check and fill your Hydraulic fluid, Oxygen, Coolant and Aftercoolant. You can also add your weight

Next we will Go back into Cockpit View.

You want to flip these switches to turn on your Battery, Generator, avionics, along with your lights-Navigation- strobe-cockpit, and beacon. This is also where you will find the switch for the pilot heat when needed.

Image
Next you want to turn on your fuel and select your tank, ( I usually unlock the controls at this stage.)
Image
Next look to the bottom of the dash, you will find the starter system.
Turn key to both for the mags. Prime the engine, and dilute the oil if needed.
I usually do a six blade count at this point, before setting the throttle

Then turn the starter off.( After the Blade count).
Then look at the throttle.
and set it.

then engauge the starter. And the plane should start.

Mags should be off for 6 blade count then set to both. Always select left tank for starting. Start with mixture in cut off then advance to run once engine starts. Idle at 800-1000 rpms until oil temp is in green and oil pressure drops.

Very good. Always good to have instructions for people just starting out.

Generally speaking the electronics, radios, nav, etc. are not powered on until after the engine is started.

This is true for most non-turbine aircraft.

True.
I usually do the procedure here after the plane has been run. On a cold start you get less battery draw with radios and all lights off
Except the interior light on for before dawn and after dark operations.

There is no need to turn the starter off, unless you've been running it too long. Count six blades, flip the mags to both, and prime until she catches. If you run the starter too long (I can't remember how long, check the manual), let it cool down and start again.

There are actually different ways to start the engine, but this is the one I prefer, and that Dudley uses. It allows the oil to cycle through the system before firing.

The issue is that you can get power spikes as you start the engine which may fry your avionics. Thus, avionics off for engine start.
Be warned: Aero engineer, real life pilot, sim programmer. Nothing good can come out of that.

Should be 30 seconds on the starter, if it doesn't start after 30 seconds of cranking it is recommended in the POH to stop cranking. Also, after every flight I reset the trims to where they should be, fuel it and add any other fluids it might need before walking away from it. From my experience as a line guy, putting to bed with full tanks is going to make it less possible for condensation to form inside the fuel tank. I know it's not modeled but I prefer to treat it as if I actually did own it (I can always dream right :P)

I know every pilot has his or her own procedure but here is mine.

1. bring flaps to up
2. ensure radiator and oil doors are on auto
3. ensure throttle cracked as necessary
4. Propeller full forward
5. Mixture is to cut off
6. fuel boost off, primer off
7. mags off
8. fuel on
9. if full tanks be on left tank
10. hydraulic release handle in
11. battery and generator on
12. fuel boost on
13. prime as necessary
14. primer off
15. starter on, count six blades
16. mags to both
17. mixture to run
18. Check Oil PSI
19. Settle engine to idle at 900-1000 RPM
20. Check flaps are up
21. Avionics on

This is what I pattern every flight on. Diligence and procedure is paramount in the '51. Great topic!!!

One thing to mention. Keeping the generator off till take off. I have read that it is hard on the regulator, going on and off, when taxiing and during runup.
