Post by danb12 »

Hi,

I have been trying to download the repaint of Cripes A' Mighty, NL151BW by CDFI, the one with the red and white gun covers... I cannot seem to be able to download it from his site, or M him?

Can anyone help please?
Thanks

Dan

Have you guys sent cdfi a PM? He might be able to get the paint to you.

Thanks,
Lewis

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the replies, I don't seem to be able to send CDFI a PM?

CDFI - Thanks for replying, if that's the case, you are extremely thorough! No wonder your paints are superb! (Not belittling anyone else)

Will you post a link when it is done?

Thanks
Dan

You will find the Warbird (and aviation tbh) communities normally happy to help. Maybe shoot the owner or pilot of the Mustang an email for the text?

thanks,

Where's Bomber12th when you need him!

CDFI,

I found these drawings showing the various stencils applied to the P-51D which might be of help: -

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost ... count=3152

It also might be worth contacting Midwest Aero who did the restoration of 'Cripes A Mighty' for the info, as Lewis suggests.

Looking forward to the finished paint!

Cheers

This is a screenshot that was taken at a similar view angle to the photo above.
If you can read the stencils, you're too close to the screen. :)

First of all, CDFI I love your work, and I've been hoping this and the other repaints you've displayed on your website, but have yet to release, will be released, as you really do stellar work. I've been enjoying all of the ones you've already made available.

Regarding the stencil in question, I wish I could help. That particular stencil has eluded me as well, at least to the point of not finding a photo clear enough to easily read. One of the photos from a walk-around of the aircraft in this thread is the clearest I've been able to see it: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/inde ... d-mustang/

Making it hard is that, that particular stencil is unique to only the "Cripes A' Mighty" and "Lil' Margaret" restorations, and isn't standard - I've also tried finding a clear photo of it on "Lil' Margaret", without success, just enough to see that it is there. You won't find it reproduced on any of the other Midwest Aero restored Mustangs, or any other authentic Mustang restoration. My thought on it is that it could have been a very late Dallas or post-production stencil, and thus may have been present on the unrestored wing of "Lil' Margaret" prior to restoration (it had mostly all of its original paint still) and was copied in its restoration. The restoration of "Cripes A' Mighty" was the next Mustang that Mike Vadeboncoeur took up, some years following his experience with "Lil' Margaret", and I think many lessons/practices from the restoration of "Lil' Margaret" were fed directly into the restoration of "Cripes". Such a stencil doesn't show up in any of the Inglewood factory drawings for the P-51D-5-NA through P-51D-30-NA production blocks. All of the standard stencils around the hardpoints/pylons are of course:

(Black Ink)
CHEM TANK
CONNECTION

(Red Ink)
PLUG WHEN
DROP TANK NOT INSTALLED

INSPECT SEAL RINGS INSIDE
BREAK-AWAY FITTINGS BEFORE
INSTALLING TANKS

DO NOT PLUG PRESSURE OUTLET WHEN
DROP TANK NOT INSTALLED

DO NOT PLUG WHEN
DROP TANK NOT INSTALLED

The rocket launcher-related stencils on the wings are also very late, and differ, for instance, compared to the rocket launcher-related stencils applied on mid-late model D-20's, which were the first to have the connections/mounts for the rocket launcher stubs. These stencils too are the same as applied on "Lil' Margaret" (and on Kermit Weeks' P-51D-30-NT "Cripes A' Mighty 3rd"), which includes numbers for each of the rear rocket launcher positions, reading 2-4-6-8-10 and 9-7-5-3-1. And I can see you've already got all of the rocket stencils that read (with arrows):

(Black Ink)
ROCKET ELECT.
CONNECTION
USE 8-32 X 1" SCREW
ONLY
