Wing tanks balancing?

Arguably the finest fighter aircraft of World War II.

Wing tanks balancing?

Post by francesco.doenz »

Had my aircraft bank to the right while flying level until I noticed that my left wing tank was nearly empty and the right full...what is the rule for changing right-left during flight to keep them balanced? Change left-right and vice versa after so many minutes or after so many miles, or according to the fuel gauges?

Hi,

I switch tanks on my A2A Mustang every 20 to 30 min, if they are equally balanced from the start.

All of the interviews I've read with the guys that originally flew Mustangs in combat during WWII, state that they would switch back and forth between the drop tanks, or wing tanks, every 15-minutes.

When starting on your wing tanks, use the left tank first. The vapor return line feeds that tank, and you'll want to make a little room for the fuel, otherwise it's vented from the aircraft.
