Yes, it was live, they had to get special approval from the ATF and FAA to do it. I don't think they're allowed to fly it with live ammo or even with functional guns, but that test was with live ammo, you can see the bullet holes in the target and occasionally some tracer rounds.

There was quite a substantial article on the project, but it alludes me at the moment. If you go to the owners website (http://www.fagenfighterswwiimuseum.org/) they still list it as having fully functional machine guns here (http://www.fagenfighterswwiimuseum.org/ ... tt/tt.html).

I know there is at least one P-40 here in NZ with functional guns, but it fires blanks at air shows.
