favorite cruise settings in the Mustang

Post by awash2002 »

I would like to know what is everyone's favorite cruise setting when flying the Civilian or War Bird Mustang? mine is 40"MP and 2300 prop I get 290 KTAS and 64gph at 10,500

At low altitudes, the book figure of 36 in Hg/2300 (or 2400) Rpm suits me fine.

Cheers

After flying my P51 around the globe, I ended up with two cruise settings.

1) Economy of Flight (GPH 55)
2) Economy of Fuel (GPH 27)

With 2) Economy of Fuel, eventually, a full oxygen tank will deplete before a full fuel tank, so below the 10,000 ceiling, ie.,

Microsoft Flight Simulator Flight Plan
Okecie -> Ruzyne
Distance: 280.8 nm
Estimated fuel burn: 119.6 gal / 717.4 lb
Estimated time en route: 1:01

My Estimate
280.8 Nautical Miles / 231 MPH Airspeed = 1.22 Hrs
1.22 Hrs * 27 GPH = 37.8 gallon Fuel burn
add : startup, taxi, take-off, landed taxi
estimate: 52.3 gallons

mid-flight readings:
altitude 7800
throttle 56%
manifold 21.4
propeller (RPM) 39%
tachometer 2074
27 GPH
airspeed 228mph
groundspeed 251mph
* elevator + 0.5 degrees

Landed with 15 gallons.

I haven't cruised in low altitudes yet, but up at FL200- 230 I find that 2500 on Prop, 30-35' Manifold and that gets me about 50-60 gph. I'm sure there's more efficient ways of burning fuel, but that works for me. Of course, if you have oxygen filled, you could go up past FL300, and adjust for better efficiency.
