Blue smoke at rotation speed

Post by Tomas Linnet »

Hi

I just had some kind of engine problem with my P51 civ. just as I was rotating I had blue smoke from the RH exhaust stack. quickly landed at the same airport, so we are both safe on the ground :)
I can see my cylinders 4 and 6 is a bit low on compression, but I cannot confirm that even numbered cylinders are on the RH side( seen from the cockpit). Can you?

You just gotta love Accu-Sim....
Kind Regards
Tomas

I found this: http://www.airpages.ru/eng/mt/merlin02.shtml

Here is the Cylinder numbering:
1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A.
1B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B. 6B.

but how do I translate this into a 1 - 12 ?? I don't know it A is to the left or to the right??

Update:
http://www.enginehistory.org/fo/FO.shtml

looks like cylinders 4 and 6 is on the RH side of the engine :-)
Kind Regards
Tomas

Hi Tomas.
Looking at the second link you posted , cylinders from front to back are left bank 7 to 12 right bank 1 to 6 , which would line up with your puff of smoke from right bank exhaust and your cylinders 4 and 6 being low compression.

The smoke will get worse as the engine wears too. Mine started out smoking at high power only, it now will start to smoke at 20-25".

Yes keep an eye on those and go the wear till dead route or start thinking about a quick hangar repair now/soonish.
