How high have you guys been?

Post by AviationAtWar »

I made it to almost 46,000 feet last night on my first attempt to see how high I could get. How high have you guys made it in the Mustang?

I think that the best I have done was 43,000 and then I gave up.

Once got her up to FL500... almost empty fuel, max RPM and throttle full open. Getting high oil pressure as it started congealing in the lines. Not recommended.

Ran out the altimeter gauge at 99K in a space shuttle. All black sky with stars. It gets weird up there in p3d. lol

Sure, that makes 1063' high. Not bad.

We are talking planes right?... :D

I recall getting the Mustang up around FL480 or so before the oil was just a total PITA and I completely lost any vertical speed.

I made it to FL500, just to try it out. But as Cody mentions, the oil gets all kinds of cold and pressures are way high. The aircraft doesn't thrive up there. Engine wasn't "as new" after this operation.

I prefer being at the critical altitudes if I must choose a place. Have a look at this video where Scott talks about how the supercharger works in the P-51 to find the sweet spot:

All the Accusim-planes are in my hangar, but they aren't sitting long enough for their engines to cool much before next flight!
