Carb Air Filter when flying low over water?

Post by HE11DUDE04 »

So as the title suggests I'm wondering If I should be using the carb air filter when flying low over water?

I’m not sure I understand your concern? I guess if you think it might be contributing to an icing condition.

Jumping fish, maybe? ;)

Now that I think about it I realise that it is unlikely but I guess my worry was about the prop blowing some water into the carb

No. Normal position for that control is always RAM AIR/COLD (unless positive signs of icing).
I will say that in all my time flying the Mustang I never once had carb ice. The location of the carb on the Merlin is really nicely placed to keep the carb warm enough under normal flight conditions and I've always considered this as positive for anti-ice.

I think you’re safe... isn’t the main intake for the carburetor just below and behind the prop hub? If so, then water kicked up by the prop would be an issue further back along the fuselage. Then again I’m not an aerodynamicist, so...
Myself, I’d be more concerned about losing my concentration and plowing right into the water!

I've never heard of a problem with water being sucked into the carb intake of a 51 flying low over water.
