I uninstalled the compressed texture packs. I even reinstalled the Spit + Accusim. However, everything is working fine still. After the first two installs my framerate was really bad and/or FSX would crash upon selecting the Spit. Installing the compressed textures fixed all problems. Now I'm trying to do some debugging but can't get the problem to reappear.

Is deleting the "texture_a" and "texture_b" folder enough? With a reinstall over top? How can I tell what texture res I'm at?

If the high quality textures are the problem I'd like to see it on my GPU usage so maybe I'll get a new video card.

The main installation uses uncompressed files for some textures (.bmp). The texture pack adds compressed versions of these (.dds). If the game sees a .bmp and a .dds texture with the same name, it will load the .dds texture.

I would recommend your next video card be a minimum of 1GB on board ram. You don't need all of it now, but you certainly may in the future.

Scott.

I have a 280 GTX 1GB already. I'm thinking about a 580.

However my main issue is that AFTER I removed the .dds textures the plane still loads. From what you're saying, removing texture_a and texture_b folders should cause it to start using the .bmp again, right? So .bmp's work, sometimes?

Update: The plane works until I reboot. Then upon selection the plane momentarily appears as green follow by a FSX crash.

Neat, huh?

The main thing I want to know is:

1. Verify whether the textures load like I think.
2. Bring it to your attention as a datapoint.

I think it is more likey that the texture crashing bug you described is more related to windows XP32bit operating system than it is to your graphics card. I have a windows XP32 bit system and an ATI 4870 with 2 gigs memory and I also had the problem till I installed the .DDS files. I would hazard a guess that most people who encountered this problem were using winXP 32bit systems.

What killerwatt said.

I have a dual-boot XpPro x32 and Win7 x64 setup and a GTX260 1GB video card. 4GB of system memory.

In Xp, without the dds bump map textures, I can load a Spit exactly ONCE. The next attempt
results in FSX crashing. Uninstalling ans reinstalling the Spit would once again give me
one good Spit flight, then back to FSX crashing on loading the Spit. All the same symptoms
that you experienced.

After converting the bmp files to dtx5 dds, I can load and fly Spits in Xp without having FSX crash.

In Win7 I can use all the default texture files with no problem.

It is some sort of resource issue that appears to plague Xp users. The different memory
management in Win7 and the ability to use more system memory circumvent the issues that Xp sees.

So, just install those dds replacement textures and enjoy your Spitfires.

As a side note, I had similar issues some time ago with the J3 Cub and a texture resizing solved my problem on that aircraft.

"The plane works until I reboot."

It sounds like the dds files stayed in memory and were cleared with the reboot.

I'm using XP64, so maybe "XP" is the issue. I'm told XP64 is more like Windows 2003.
I get the use it once problem too.

Anyway, a new 580 GTX is on it's way. It's step one for the slow ($$$) upgrade ......

Its the way XP manages the Memory compared to Windows 7 + the 32bit 64bit devide.

To use the super high quality textures I would personally recommend Win7 64bit and 3D card with over 1GB Ram onboard.

So when I upgrade my PC, get Windows 7 64bit. That's good to know. the bmp's do look better. Thanks for the info all. :)

Yes certainly, 64 should be the standard but its taken forever for stubborn hardware manufactuers to finally get themselves sorted out. Now finally we are pretty much on the 64bit standard and this should be the upgrade path for anyone wanting to stay on top of things from the life of there computer.
