It's not quite as big as the BoB2 map. See here: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/t ... ost3149811

Compare BoB2 in post #1 with full CoD in post #3

On the plus side, it is reasonable to expect that the CoD map will be fully populated on the continent side.

Thanks PV ... I just now found a picture of CFS3's map!

While it appears that more area could have been added to the CFS3 map, like the Mediterranean, Poland, and other points eastward, It would appear Microsoft had the right idea of map size from the start.

IF and When A2A decides to implement their WW2 Airwar Combat Sim, I hope they have the good sense to develop an operations map slightly larger than this:

I loved long range bomber raids in CFS3...

Well I've been away from posting (and from playing) but been lurking around, from time to time and I want to take this quote to (again) request (beg, is the more correct word) that A2A makes a WW2 Airwar Combat Sim, specially after IL2:Cliffs of Dover (what a ridiculous name, BTW) disaster - and I'm not even talking about the performance issues which I believe will eventually be solved - I'm talking about the complete lack of something remotedly similar to a dynamic campaign and the total unexistance of a pilot career, a thing that while poorly implemented even existed in previous IL2 sims!

An insider's account of why the CoD release has - thus far - been such a disaster:

Geez. It would take like 100 people 2 years to make a map that size period-accurate. I can't image µ$ was able to fully populate
a map that size - it must have had great stretches either empty or repeating simple patterns. (No, I've never had CFS3, nor
seen it run).

Can't understand what's being said, but this is a pretty fascinating detailed
review of CoD, with some truly gorgeous and amazing images. I'm guessing
it's in Polish, but maybe another nearby language.

Not sure how MS did it PV. But I can tell you I reinstalled CFS3 on my latest computer last night, It took the better part of the night just getting refamiliar with the controls and all.

That was incredible. I wonder what kind of system it would take to run COD with graphics like that.

Looks good but did you see the poor collision detection at 8:06 in the video.
That wing hitting a tree trunk should have caused a disaster.

Thought I'd better post an update to my earlier, perhaps excessively negative note on IL-2 COD.

Eventually - despite my misgivings - it installed, patched & updated, via STEAM.

My rig is Crossfire running 2 x 5850 Vapor-Xs. Contary to earlier rumour I have had no Crossfire issues & framerates seem fine (over water) on "High" graphics settings for everything except aircraft (which I've as far as possible maxed out); buildings & trees (both of which I've set at "Medium" as they are framerate gobblers).

Coming from over water to over land; framerates do initially seem to get jittery; then settle down to quite playable levels. The graphics (particularly water effects) do look lovely; but there are still minor niggles like the Hurricane rear-view mirror stubbornly refusing to appear - & the absence of force feedback. I wonder how much (if at all) immersivity would improve through use of e.g., a Buttkicker Gamer 2 to substitute the vibration effects back in.

The ballastic effects also seem undermodelled when you come to IL-2 COD from BoB2: there seems to be be no bullet drop & in my first few attempts to hose down E/As I invariably shot over the top of their canopies; compensating for seemingly non-existent gravitational ballistic effects.

As other contributors have noted, there is no single player campaign yet; & there is still the issue of needing STEAM running in the background; about which I am not overly confortable. But in terms of the game visually; it runs well on my rig & looks amazing most of the time. No doubt it will improve over time; but as things stand I still prefer BoB2 one to ones & interceptions. I have yet to try a large-scale, multiple aircraft scenario in IL2-COD but will post further comments when I have.

System:
MSI 870A Fuzion motherboard
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T 3.20GHz
4 x 2Gb Corsair Dominator DDR3 running at 1066
2 x 1Tb Samsung HDD's in RAID 1 mode
2 x Radeon 5850 Vapor-X in Crossfire mode
Windows 7 64-bit OS :) :)

Forgot to note in my previous post that my son (who is very au fait with these things) told me that the IL-2 COD team have not yet modelled collision damage effects due to trees because of the loads this would impose on the CPU & the likely framerate effects.

Do other sims have collision detection with individual trees?

In my experience, most sims use something like a 'collision box' over tree areas. But perhaps more modern sims do have individual tree collision, I've not played RoF yet.

EDIT: Is there really NO single player CAMPAIGN in CoD?!?!?!

Reading through the debates on SimHQ, I've come to the conclusion that IL2 and IL2:COD do not qualify as games anymore.
It's now a religion.
