Hello

My problem is, that i don't know how to accelerate the spit fast on high altitudes (more or less 25.000 feet), after a series of maneuvers, i need to build the speed with straght flight or dive to build up the energy, the question is, is there a way to speed up on high altitudes faster, maybe by playing with pitch and trim, it would be good to know for sims like cliffs of dover, where the enegry.....is Everything. 8)

The Spit did lack acceleration at higher altitudes.

Stick the nose down and gain some speed and it is sometimes handy to zoom climb...always remember though that if you dive to higher than your maximum straight line speed, then you will have a net decrease in height after the zoom...ideally you should only dive until you hit that speed and then zoom.

The lack of acceleration (something like 2-3 minutes from cruise to top I seem to recall) is one reason that combat cruises were made at high speed (even to 240, 260 indicated) and at high boost, low rpm. It all helped when you suddenly had to accelerate

Just an extra thought on the subject .. and American Ace experts may know more detail...

I saw an interview with a top P-51 Pilot who had felt very guilty, since the war, for a particular incident.
He was escorting some bombers and closer to home than not, they had setup the P-51's for "economy cruise".

There had been a sudden and surprise attack by German aircraft and by the time the escort had "cleaned up" their aircraft and got up to speed the, battle was over and at least one bomber had been shot down with the loss of her crew.

If I remember rightly the P-51's failed to even get a shot off. Such was the lag between "power up" and combat speeds, even in the '51.
