A lot of the symptoms will be fairly obvious when you come across them. There could be smoke pouring out of the exhausts, the RPM needle could be bouncing up and down the dial. Excessive Oil or Fuel consumption. The Engine can also sound much different. Whilst I've never destroyed a cub engine (You'd have to really freaking thrash the thing beyond belief to do so) I'd imagine it would clatter, misfire and make whining sounds and that's if it doesn't just skip all that business and simply cop it.

To be honest, all you need to do is not redline it, have the fuel and oil and let it warm up first and it'll take you around the world.
