The P-40 had been developed into the XP-46, but apparently North American bought some test data from Curtiss, to help begin the P-51. The British were the first to use the P-51 (well, Mustang Mk.I, NA-73, NA-83); but I'm pretty certain (we will never know though) that without Britain's interest, the P-51 as we know it would most likely have assimilated. To note, it was about two months between the Mustang Mk.I delivery to the British, and the first P-51A delivery to the USAAC. The differences between the XP-51 and XP-46 were many, yet much alike. The development of the P-51, with a Packard V-1650 Merlin rather than the Allison V-1710 was a major leap, and it was indeed unlike fighters before it. At EAA this year, I heard Bud Anderson and two other speakers talking about the development of the Mustang - it had some connections to the P-40, and the USAAC had already sought a higher-performance fighter with a two-stage supercharger at the same time the British did, and although the history books state it was Britain's commission (which it was), it was still much of a joint-venture, in a sense.

Oh uh... now that we have an Accusimmed Allison, how about doubling it and adding a couple turbos?

I can't be the only one who'd like to see that!

My favorite is 07 Jan 2012, much better than 7/1/12 or 1/7/12, there's no confusion, especially in the wee months and days

No confusion in this country about the date, most of the world knows what we are saying :-)

YA! On a side note. Ever wonder what the P-40 would have become if NA didn't talk the brits into making the P51?

I say, Scott!

When you get a moment, can you and the chaps put one of those there Merlins from the Spitfire on your P-40 Airframe and see what happens please?

Gotta go. Things to do, wars to fight, Jerries to duff up and all that stuff.

Ta muchly.

The Brits.

Something will explode
The Allison is not really that much worse of engine, and looking at durability it's actually better. What you really need on it, is a serious turbo to get it into altitude, everything's slow down on the deck (except the F-104 ;P ).

Two guys at one of my local airports are building their own scratch-built Spitfire, replicated off the Mk.V i think, and it will be powered by an Allison, because the Rolls-Royce is too fussy, especially for two guys who'd rather fly after spending all that time making a full-scale model of a Spitfire.

I memorized my debit card info for the PMDG 737NGX release, so I'm ready whenever A2A is!

In that case, you might want to steer clear of mind readers like Kreskin.
