Hi, I have a copy of the original BOAC flight manual for The B377 and when I look at the performance figures for airspeed I think I have detected a problem. The airspeed markings for Flap range, normal airspeed and maximum are calibrated in MPH on the indicator whereas the indicator says it is indicating knots.

Customer option. Back with the B377 was built, every airline had its own panel design, usually selected by the type's Chief Pilot. As such, it wasn't uncommon that for aircraft that were built over a period of time for the same company to have several different panels as Chief Pilots changed. It wasn't until the late 1960's that the "standard" IFR panel really showed up.

Hi CAPflyer, what you say is true about different options back in the 1950's but if the instrument ranges are calibrated in MPH then the instrument would be placarded in MPH and not Knots.
The Airspeed ranges are as follows:
KNOTS MPH COLOUR RANGE
Maximum 302 348 RED HAND

Caution 34 below maximum 39 yellow

Normal 123 to 268 142 to 309 green arc

Flap Operating range 89 to 159 102 to 183 White Arc

If you look at the Airspeed indicator on the panel you can check that the MPH ranges have been used but the instrument has been placarded in KNOTS. Hence if your rotate speed was 100Knots and you rotated at 100Mph
you would be in trouble the aircraft would stall!

That's not only when common sense comes into play, but also knowing that limitation is present. If you would calculate your Vr in knots but rotated at 100 mph you should not be flying..

Harvard4,

I don't know what version of the aircraft you are using, but as far as Cots V1.1 goes, all is correct. Those speed ranges on the instruments are correct in KNOTS, according to the figures that are found in the real manual, and the instrument does indeed register in KNOTS...For instance, when you hit Shift-Z, you can verify for yourself that when FSX reports the aircraft is flying 150 knots, the instrument is also reporting a speed of 150 knots. This all looks good to me, and I don't think there is a problem here between knots and statute mph, at least not in Cots v1.1 (and there was a massive change in the instrument for Version 1.1 to incorporate a moving Red Hand). You are using the latest version of CoTS, right? :?:
