C-97 Landing Dodgeville,WI

Post by Mazo »

I don't have the 377 in my hangar ...... at this time, but thought you 377 Stratocruiser pilots would find this short field landing interesting. I lived about 30 miles from where this took place and recall that there was a lot of conversation concerning landing the C-97 on a 2800' airfield. Took a lot of guts, brakes and reverse thrust to bring it to a halt!

Hope you enjoy it!

( I did a search here but didn't find that it had been posted before but sorry if it has been posted before)

Great vid. Thanks for posting the link.
"Softly touched the runway" said the commentator. Bet it didn't feel like that on the 377.
Looked more of an off field landing with all that dust.

I know, its a sin doing that to it, but at least they weren't going to scrap it (which is probably what happened
to it by now).

Well, the good news is that it never did become a coffee shop and it is still there to this day! It appears from the Don Q Inn website that there are tours of the aircraft on weekends. If you look on Google Earth for Dodgeville,WI and then go north of the city a couple of miles, you can see the airport and the aircraft. The airstrip drops off at both ends so it was imperative for the pilots to get her stopped in time! On highway 23, as you drive past the airport, the runway is several feet above your vehicle and the other end drops off over a rather large hill.
The airport is in FSX listed as Dodgeville Muni. Looks like a good challenge for you 377 Stratocruiser pilots! Give it a shot and let us know the results!

Neat video but sad to see a flying plane grounded as a tourist atraction.
