On approach while having had the throttle on idle for a minute or so, I heard a grinding sound. It lasted only for a couple seconds but still not exactly reassuring sounds! The mechanics noted nothing about it and in fact stated the engine to be in excellent shape. Not so sure about that! Anybody have experience with this and if so, should I be concerned for the plane? I have been pushing the plane a bit, low oil temps at high RPMs, so perhaps a ticking time bomb. Nice thing about the Cub is you can land it just about anywhere just in case...

I wouln't expect the engine to produce any grinding, only a big bang or a sudden silence, in the case of your engine, perhaps...
No, this could be due to several factors, all to do with physical forces acting on the fuselage, your speed (too high or too low) is a good one, or perhaps you are sideslipping ?
