Hello Marine,
Sorry I have not replied earlier but real life got me in his sights for a while but I have ducked into a cloud and shaken him off for a bit.
I have not heard of a Spit crashing near Gypsy Patch Lane. The only WW2 aircraft I have heard of is a ME110 shot down over Failand in September 1940 and a Wellington bomber that crash landed in St. Andrews park later in the war (quite a feat if you know how small the park is and how it is surrounded by houses).
I doubt that the newspapers in the Bristol records office would help because it would have been sensitive information. I believe it was 501 squadron at Filton for a time during BOB.
My late mother in law was a nine year old child living across the road from the airfield in Filton Avenue during BOB and although she mentioned the air raid shelter taking a direct hit and killing many aircraft factory workers, she never mentioned a Spit coming down. Neither did my Dad who was 19 and about to go into the RAF at this time, although he did relate the story of the ME110. Perhaps we only reported enemy aircraft downed and swept our own losses under the carpet a bit.
Would be interesting to find out though.

No problem my friend,RL does tend to knock you down when you least expect it,but i'm glad you are okay now.
Thanks for inquiring about that spit,i think you are right in saying they only probably reported enemy planes being shot down, not to disturb the peoples moral.
The reason the bloke told me about the spit is,because he came up to my house to buy a golf buggy off me,(i play golf at Bristol golf club)i invited him into my house as you do,and he saw the spit i flew in on my PC,which is my desktop picture, one thing led to another, and he was here for over an hour,he was more interested in talking about spits, than he was about the golf buggy
So it came down to looking at the Sim of BOB,he couldn't believe how realistic it is,couldn't take the flipping joystick out of his hand,as he got carried away so much in trying to land the spit,he was like a Kamikaze pilot, crashed everytime, but he loved it.
He is now going to show his Son about the Sim as he is into planes as well.
Pity i didn't get more info off him about the spit, but i guess being only 5 yrs old then,he wouldn't have been able to tell me anymore about it.I remember those times when the kids loved playing with wooden spitfires, they would have bitten your hand off to have been offered one

Crazy days they were.
