Hey guys,
After giving the P-40 some shine, I decided to try out the Spitfire. I tried the same proceedure and it worked :)

Here was the first attempt and result.

Next I thougt it would be cool to see what the Spitfire would look like in Prewar USAAC colors...perhaps what it might look like if the Spitfire were ever evaluated by the USAAC.

Here is the Spitfire MkIIa in USAAC colors.

Thanks guys, glad you like it.

Skycat, unfortunately that first one was just a test texture which was overwritten by the USAAC paint. However I will paint another like that based on the Hurricane prototype from a request which should be pretty plain and silver apart from the ID numbers.

Cheers

Stars just dont look right on the Spitfire, EWE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not my bag personally but theres plenty of folks out there that will love this, well done pilottj on a great repaint. I like the less shiney if I had to pick one, though I did notice you go a little shiney mental recently. As a community do we need a non shiney things intervention?

haha yeah, well it all started when I was doing some updates to my faitful Andorian Tejanahawk, then the gears started turning in my head after doing 'Stang Evil and learning about fresnel and env maps lol. In actuallity I don't want Tejanahawk to be super shiny...just something very very subtle. I couldn't do any major shine to it even if I wanted, because I would have to redo the paintscheme and it's alpha layers since I don't have it's PSD files anymore. Besides the pilot of Tejanahawk is the kind of bloke who has better things to do than spend all his time polishing his airplane....like flying it.

That's cool!

I think it would look awesome in bare metal shine, but with Battle of Britain era insignias- top wing blue/red, bottom wing blue/white/red, fuselage gold/blue/white/red, and with the wide red white and blue flash on the tail, and a black spinner.

Just my thoughts as they come to me :)

Excellent work, btw

Joe

You're the resident Spitfire fanatic, so can you answer my question why you never see Spitfires as highly polished as a Mustang?

Peter,

Different philosophies. The pre-war RAF had silver doped aircraft, largely, as a "display" measure. The RAF often gave "grand" performances and was a very "public" arm. They had, however, led the way in WW1 on several counts, one of which was developing camoflage that was hard to see against the ground (trenches). When war looked likely again, the camoflage returned and there was never a reason to go back. During the BoB they were often at a height disadvantage. Later Rhubarbs etc over France were low level affairs and daylight bombing in the RAF was mostly tactical. Night bombing didn't require escorts to any significant degree (Serrate missions aside) and so fighter duties were not commonly performed at altitudes where downlooking camoflage was not important, at least for much of the war.

Fashion/custom never really saw it necessary to do anything but camoflage aircraft.

My take on it, anyway

For your next one, why don't you do a shiny pre-war US barnstorming/Flying Circus Spitfire ... ?

PS. just kidding ...
