Re: B377 Stratocruiser
Whoever voted no is objectively wrong Through what logic are you qualified to judge others' responses to a survey? The question was simple and personal and I see 17 honest responses reflecting individuals' opinions on the survey here. What could possibly be wrong about that?? What qualifies me? My ...

Make sure to add a .1 to the logbook entry as the hobbs would have stopped counting after the engines were shut off

Re: Looping a C-130
Sorry, I still don't think it's a loop. None of the "reputable" sources say it's a loop, and of all the views of what is claimed to be a "loop" there is no horizon reference visible. The "loop" at 2:08 looks like another Chandelle. The other video I've linked from furt...

Re: Flightchops learns some important stuff during his biannual flight review
What a fantastic video! I learned lots in a manner of minutes. Such a strange thing to see - that the airline pilots and GA pilots have completely different answers to basic questions. It reveals that there really is a difference between being a pro and a recreational pilot, much though there shoul...

Re: fundamental guidance on Captain Jake landing
This is completely false. If the aircraft flies an approach at the proper airspeed (not any faster or slower) it doesn't matter what the winds are doing or what the groundspeed is. When the aircraft airspeed decreases below it's landing configuration 1G stall speed in a normal landing configuration...

Re: fundamental guidance on Captain Jake landing
My suggestion to you is get a copy of Stick and Rudder and study it. Seems like a serious argument! Again the groundspeed will be significantly higher on hot and humid days and especially so at higher altitudes. If you use groundspeed as your measure of energy, then you will be in for a nasty shock...

Re: fundamental guidance on Captain Jake landing
...The only speed you care about over the runway before actually landing the airplane is your ground speed... Hi everyone! I have to strongly disagree to your opinion. Groundspeed is the reason we pick different landing directions but it does in no way reflect how high or low you are on energy. Air...

Re: fundamental guidance on Captain Jake landing
Final approach speed isn't landing speed. The only speed you care about over the runway before actually landing the airplane is your ground speed. This is why we avoid a downwind landing in almost every case. 65 knots right over the runway will be far too fast in a C182. As your energy bleeds off ov...

Re: Aerobatics with the P-51 Mustang
Given the P-51 doesn't have a symmetrical airfoil like your typical aerobatic plane, it is not surprising that your nose attitude is not vertical. The zero-lift axis of a non-symmetrical wing does not correspond to the appearance of perfect vertical attitude of the fuselage, etc. Usually I stall at ...

Re: Aerobatics with the P-51 Mustang
As you fly vertical, your airspeed and your G will both bleed off. An indication of the zero-lift axis is that they are synced in a way. I didn't say you were at 0, but as you reach it due to decay in energy, then you proceed as described.

Re: Aerobatics with the P-51 Mustang
Establish a vertical up-line on the zero-lift axis, as you reach 0 airspeed and 0G concurrently, kick full left rudder, right aileron, and perhaps a little push. Establish zero-lift on the vertical down line. Dudley explained its feasibility in the Mustang, at least this is the procedure for a hamme...

Re: Warbird adventures
The challenge for me is the sight picture of the approach. Similarly, getting in to runway 28 at Darrington (1S2) is a challenge due to the mountain to the east of the runway. Neither one are that much problem if I've just completed about ten touch and goes in the aircraft. It's part art, part scie...
