Re: Quick poll

I think the thing with student pilots is that they need to understand what they are doing with each checklist item, and sometimes reading and doing each checklist item in chronological order may help them learn at a slow and steady pace so that omission is less likely to happen. When I instructed, m...

Re: Aviation Career

I don't know about the Philippines specifically, but I know in Asia, cadet programs can be rather common (if airlines are your thing). These are generally airline-sponsored training programs, where they train you from 0 hours to flying a big jet. If only they had these where I live, I would have ser...

Re: Need a RW Pilot's help please!

I got 490 feet. This question is a little tricky, since we use inches of mercury on our altimeters here in Canada. Without being an expert with hPa, the equivalent in*hg can be found using cross multiplication. Here's how I arrived at my answer: 1) Convert hPa (lol) using cross multiplication. Since...

Re: The Coolest GA planes - Your List

1) Cessna 172 - There is no better trainer out there that is more user friendly 2) DHC-2 Beaver - It can land in your back yard, even if there is nothing but gravel in your back yard. 3) DHC-6 Twin Otter - This twin apparently can land in your back yard as well. 4) Beech King Air - Can serve any kin...

Re: How did I do?

I've seen some youtube videos with specs like that, and FSX appeared smooth as silk with mind blowing graphics. I think it will be okay?

That i7-4790 is a pretty beefy and new processor in itself, and that GTX760 is a bit of a monster for a mid-range video card.

Re: Take off and landing distances C182T

Wowsers. Okay, I'm just going to break everything simply, because this should be a simple process. From what I remember of Cessna airplanes, here is how you work out your numbers: Step 1: Find the chart for your particular weight Step 2: Figure out your pressure altitude. To do that, take 29.92 - cu...

Re: Living at the edge

How to live life can be a bit subjective. Living life surfing the internet and hanging the head over a smartphone probably isn't a good thing as far as health goes, but I am not one to argue with those who are content with it. My job is literally piloting airplanes, and somewhere deep in the recesse...

I enjoy the show. From a pilot perspective, there is a lot one can learn from problems of the past.

Re: Best flight simulator

FSX still holds it's own, though we are biased given that this is predominantly an FSX forum. You don't necessarily need a particular addon to do preflight inspections, though A2A's C172, and probably the other GA planes do have an interactive walk around function which kind of simulates what...

Re: Question on Carb heat use

Back in my instructor days, I used to do the following: -Check carb heat during run-up on the ground -Pull the carb heat for a couple seconds when leveling out for cruise, just to check for ice. -Carb heat full blast during low-powered descents below the green arc or during mid-low power settings (I...

Re: Setting props for takeoff SOP

Thanks, yeah I dug all over but cannot find information on this. Incidentally, I did find a checklist of sort on the B-17 in the X-Plane community, where it tells you to set the RPM to just a hair under 2400 RPM when adjusting the powers for takeoff. This actually works out to a nice 2500 RPM on the...

I've seen that video before. I'm pretty familiar with the operation of governed propellers. What I'm not familiar is with the propellers on the B-17 specifically

Setting props for takeoff SOP

I'm pretty lazy, and so most of my takeoffs I have the co-pilot manage my propellers. I am a bit curious, however, as to how the props are normally managed for takeoff. One thing that I've noticed numerous times is that with the prop levers all the way up, they will tend to overspeed while rolling d...
