Re: First jet fighter pilot to shoot himself down...
There were a couple of F-104 issues with the gun during early test firings as well. Don't remember if anyone had to return the plane to the taxpayers in pieces

Re: Starfighter!
Umm... not really, the only armament other than US users added were Kormoran antiship missiles (Germans), cluster bombs (Canadian), and Sparrows (Italians). In the US the Zipper was carrying Sidewinders, tanks, napalm, dumb bombs (mostly M117), rockets - both 5" Zunis, and 2,75" FFARs, gu...

Re: Starfighter!
 You also have to remember that originally all the 104 had to carry was a 20m Gatling gun and maybe a couple of Sidewinders 8) Take a look at a German/Canadian/Italian 104's and we have fuel tanks, missiles, bombs, cameras and anything else they could attach. Add in the weather and low level m...

Re: Starfighter!
Awesome! It's probably the plane I'm looking most forward to. We had 51 Starfighters in the Danish Airforce, they were retired in 1986 where they were replaced by F-16's. I know the Danish Airforce has a habit of crashing their fighters, the Starfighter was no exception - 22 crashed. It i...

Re: Starfighter!
I don't know that they'll have much in the way of "variants" of the F-104 since they've stated several times the sole reason for the F-104 was to test the engine as the F-104 and F-4 have the same engine. While the F-104G and CF-104 (really much the same aircraft just the CF-104 powered b...

Re: Starfighter!
:D I agree we need the "G"/CF-104 as it was a big seller back in the day. As an aside the first Canadian built Starfighter to fly in Canada August 14, 1961 has been found and is in the process (hopefully) of being placed in a Museum in Winnipeg to honour all those who built, flew and maint...

Re: Bad weekend for aviation...
This is a very bad weekend for air shows: in addition to yesterday's accidents, today a wing walker fell about 200 feet while attempting to transfer from his aircraft to a helicopter at the Selfridge Air Show near Detroit. His condition is uncertain as far as I've heard. Joe  No he's dead as...

 I know your pain. In North America we have two sources if you had the right Satellite dish DirecTv in the USA or TSN in Canada. TSN is the BBC feed and DirecTv is Speed channel which uses Bob Varsha, David Hobbs and Steve Matchett in a studio in the USA with Wil Buxton on site. TSN is the Eng...

Re: Earliest Memories of your Very First Flight as a child.
No one seems bothered by FOD anymore. When I started in aviation we were hammered about FOD. No hats on the flight line and remove insignia or sew it on. I once spent half an hour groping in an engine inlet behind the lower half of the particle separator looking for a bent cotter pin. Fortunately I ...
