OK, so where is 2,13?

Post by 33lima3 »

I've had to reinstall BoB2 from scratch from my original CD after an SSD failed and now of course I'm intending to update to 2.13. But I don't seem to have it on any of my backup CDs (doh!), and the A2A link to it on the 2.13 thread says 'not found'. Google seems no better. So where is it? Any pointers VERY welcome, I am champing at the bit to start playing BoB2 again!

TIA!

Thank you Fred - a life saver, that one! My heart sank when I realised that like an idiot I hadn't got it backed up anywhere! Then to find the A2A link wasn't working...anyway, I'll be back in BoB2 business very shortly, and a bit wiser to boot - many thanks!

The patch link should be repaired shortly. Thanks for letting us know it was broken, we wouldn't think to check otherwise.

Oh, by the way, regarding the SSD, out of curiosity, was it a spontaneous failure, and if so, what brand/age?

Hi PV! I have to confess here that when, for the first time late last year I installed one of those mega, two-deck graphics cards (GTX580) with the cooling vents on the lower deck, I neglected to knock out the blanking plate in the lower slot. Somehow I managed to avoid killing my graphics card (so far anyway) but this may have been why my PC shut down, accompanied by a faint odour of something overheating. I'm keeping my fingers crossed re the card but I didn't get artifacts or anything before the shut down.

On inspection, the Win 7 SSD was VERY hot to the touch, so perhaps it was what failed. I had it installed into the 3.5 inch drive cage with screws on one side so perhaps the heat wasn't being led away as efficiently it should have been, had it been on a proper mounting kit with metal rails each side (used for its replacement). I tried power but no data for 30 min, power back for 30 sec, then repeated that cycle, but was still dead as a dodo. It is/was an Integral brand V Series 120GB, SATA connector not one of those PCI jobs, bought brand new for the Win 7 install about 4-5 months ago. The replacement is a Kingston 240GB. Hopefully I will avoid bricking that.

Thanks for the feedback on the campaign reports at SimHQ, Fred. It's a shame I won't be able to pick up where that left off, but rather than letting the campaign play in 2d till it gets back to 24 July, I plan to re-start with my fresh install at the next stage of the Battle. Just need a few days with everything including BoB2 as stable as it was before, first, in case there was something I did first time that I've forgotten to do this time. I might try the 2.14 Beta this time, installed via JSGME if that's possible, so I can disable it if I get any probs.

Excuse the interruption, but I wanted to ask, how old is the power supply in you computer, and what is its output rating? I ask because it sounds like it might be getting overloaded. This can make anything drawing power from it overheat as well. I took a whole PC down once because I used too weak a power supply. HDD, motherboard, and video card all dead.

As a rule of thumb, expect a power supply to deliver less wattage over time (up to a third in some cases, I've read). Therefore you need to make sure your power supply is able to supply at least a third more beyond what your system demands. I would go higher than that by a good margin, as an extra precaution, especially if you plan to upgrade the components in the future. It means getting out the calculator and adding up the power ratings on everything in it.

In my own case, I run a relatively new PC with a 3D card and etc. It adds up to around 430 watts at heavy load like in a 3D game, but I use a 750 watt power supply. It's 80+ bronze certified, which is supposed to mean that it has achieved an efficiency of over 80 percent on a full load, but there are much better ones if you have the money to spare on one. I can't vouch for the manufacturers' claims on efficiency. You'll probably want to stick with whatever the herd is buying. I chose Thermaltake brand for this build, and it's been fine for nearly 3 years now. At any rate, higher efficiency means less heat, which is always desirable. This'll explain it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/80_Plus

Also, here's a good quote from wikipedia's article on computer power supplies:
The system power consumption is a sum of the power ratings for all of the components of the computer system that draw on the power supply. Some graphics cards (especially multiple cards) and large groups of hard drives can place very heavy demands on the 12v lines of the PSU, and for these loads, the PSU's 12 V rating is crucial. The total 12 V rating on the power supply must be higher than the current required by such devices so that the PSU can fully serve the system when its other 12 V system components are taken into account
I found a power supply calculator online sort of thing for you: https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator This added mine up to 411 watts but I know it's a little higher than that. So I figure 600W minimum PSU, and I got the 750W in case I want to upgrade in the future.

Huh, this is my 500th post.

Thanks for the info McMick. I had a chronic system slowdown end of last year caused by a faulty power supply. Luckily I had a spare unused power supply on hand as a replacement. It's 550volts and I suspect that I am under powered and need something in the region of 750 watts.

I haven't checked recently but I think I have 750W, having checked when I stuck in the GTX580, complete with the extra cable adaptor I needed to feed that hungry big beast.

So far, so good, anyway, and the RAF campaign reporting has been resumed at Adler Tag.
